According to nutritionist Whitney Stuart, senna tea is an herbal tea made from the leaves and pods of the senna plant, a member of the legume family, which has laxative properties, treats constipation, and promotes intestinal health.
Senna tea contains active compounds sennoside and senna glycosides, which stimulate the muscles of the colon, thereby promoting intestinal motility, increasing the amount of water and electrolytes in the colon, helping to soften stools, said nutritionist Wa Na Chun.
A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that adding senna to the diet can improve bowel movement frequency. And a systematic review published in the same journal found senna to be the top laxative.
