What makes us roll our eyes?
In the context of increasing environmental pollution along with the habit of using digital devices for a long time, eyes are prone to dryness, itching, fatigue and burning - the reasons why many people have the habit of rubbing their eyes. Eye bags can also be a sign of an allergy, infection, or simply a habit reflection.
Reasons why you should not rub your eyes
- Risk of damage and chronic diseases
According to research published in the International Journal of Dental Medicine, strong or continuous eye rubbing can damage the cornea, leading to serious diseases such as keratoconus (curved cornea) - a condition in which the cornea is bulging and thinning. The extent of damage depends on the force and duration of the rubbing.
- Risk of infection and allergies
Eye rubbing is a way to spread bacteria and viruses from hand to eye, easily causing conjunctivitis or allergic reactions, thereby making the eyes itchy and you want to rub more.
- Irritation and burning sensation
Inorganics such as spices and dirt left on the hands can be transmitted to the eyes when rubbed, causing irritation, burning and redness of the eyes, making the eye discomfort worse.
Therefore, to protect your eyes, you should limit the habit of rubbing your eyes and always keep your hands clean to avoid bacteria from contacting your eyes.
