In Quang Ninh, the number of patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure is increasing, currently there are nearly 1,000 people. Of which, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is treating dialysis for nearly 200 patients.
Most of them have to maintain dialysis for life, with high treatment costs, greatly affecting their quality of life and working ability.
Kidney transplantation is an effective treatment that helps patients recover their health, prolong their life, return to work and significantly reduce long-term treatment costs. Therefore, the implementation of kidney transplant techniques right at provincial hospitals is an urgent need.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (born in 1984, Phuong Dong ward, Uong Bi city) shared: "I have been on dialysis at the hospital for nearly two years. When I learned that the hospital would be implementing a kidney transplant, I immediately registered.
According to the survey, the cost of kidney transplants at central hospitals ranges from 1.3 to 1.7 billion VND. If implemented in my home province according to the general price framework of the Ministry of Health, I can save significantly on travel, accommodation and post-operative expenses. I really hope the program will be implemented soon".
2025 is identified by the Quang Ninh Department of Health as a breakthrough year in the development of specialized healthcare, especially the implementation of organ transplant techniques at the provincial level. Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is ready for organ transplant implementation, first of all kidney transplantation.

With the support of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, more than 50 doctors, nurses and technicians have been trained in depth and granted certificates related to kidney transplantation.
The hospital has also upgraded the operating room system, intensive care unit and fully equipped with modern medical equipment, including diagnostic machines, anesthesia, resuscitation, surgical tools and investment wardrobes.
Specifically developed procedures and regulations on selection and treatment before - during - after kidney transplantation.
Dr. Vu Trung Kien - Head of the General Planning Department of the hospital - said: "The kidney transplant appraisal dossier has been sent to the Ministry of Health, the hospital is waiting for the Appraisal Council to come and work to get an official license. When approved, the hospital will select kidney transplant pairs and perform the first transplant with support from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital".
In addition to professional preparation, the hospital is focusing on organ donation activities. The hospital has coordinated with the Vietnam Association for Tissue and Body Donation in Quang Ninh to establish a tissue and organ donation consultation team after death or brain death.
With careful preparation, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital is getting closer to performing the first kidney transplant, opening up hope for hundreds of patients with chronic kidney failure in Quang Ninh.
