Potential benefits of kombucha
A study published in the journal PLOS Genetics shows that kombucha can change metabolism in worm C. elegans, thereby reducing fat storage. However, this result cannot confirm the same effect in humans.
Kombucha is not a miracle weight loss solution, but some of its properties, such as probiotics that aid digestion, stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings, can help control weight, says Dr. Heather Viola, a family medicine specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital (USA).
In addition, kombucha contains antioxidants, antibacterial properties and can support liver health. A balanced gut microbiome, according to Dr. Viola, will help reduce inflammation, improve metabolism and prevent fat accumulation.
Despite the prospects, scientists still emphasize the need for more research on humans. Dr. Christoph Buettner, endocrinologist at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers Health University (USA), analyzed: "We do not have any evidence that kombucha works on the human body like on worms. While humans digest food, worms only eat bacteria."
Mr. Buettner noted that some types of kombucha in bottles contain high sugar content, even equivalent to carbonated soft drinks: If kombucha has more sugar, it is no different from a bag of soda. In that case, the filtered water is even healthier".
Experts agree that kombucha can be part of a healthy diet, but it should not be expected to automatically bring weight loss results. What is more important is to maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly and control calorie intake.
Should you drink kombucha to lose weight?
If you want to try it, consumers should choose kombucha with low sugar and clear origins. Some brands may be suitable for keto diets, but not all of them are.
Dr. Viola emphasized: "It is necessary to conduct clinical trials to determine whether kombucha really helps people lose weight, as well as the dosage and frequency of consumption".
While waiting for more scientific evidence, kombucha can be considered an interesting supplement, but cannot replace basic weight loss principles such as eating reasonably and staying active.
