Rafael Nadal has decided not to participate in the 2024 US Open due to concerns about his physical condition. The Spanish tennis player announced this information on August 7, stating that his next event will be the Laver Cup at the end of September.
With Nadal, the most recent US Open title won in the United States in the last 4 titles was in 2019, this is the second consecutive year he has not participated in the final Grand Slam of the year.
"I am writing here today to let you know that, this year, I have decided not to participate in the US Open, where I have wonderful memories," the 38-year-old tennis player wrote in a post on X.
“I will remember the special and electrifying night practices in NYC at Ashe, but I do not think I can contribute 100% of my energy this time.”
The Spanish legend stated that his next event will be the Laver Cup, taking place from September 20 to 22 in Berlin, Germany.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the men's singles and reached the quarterfinals of the men's doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.
After Nadal's withdrawal, US Open Director Stacey Allaster stated in a statement: "Rafa is an excellent champion and fans as well as all those involved in the tournament will remember him at this year's tournament."
We wish him all the best and hope he returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The former world No. 1 has fallen to 159th place on the ranking after two years struggling with injuries and receiving one of the worst losses of his career against Djokovic at the Olympics with a score of 1-6, 4-6.
Nadal did not attend the Australian Open in January after suffering a muscle tear in his return after a long period of injury. In May, he was eliminated in the first round of the French Open (lost to Alexander Zverev).
The Spanish tennis player skipped Wimbledon to prepare for the Paris Olympics, where tennis is held on clay at Roland Garros, where he has 14 French Open titles.
