    Former Chinese Premier Zhou Rongji passed away in Beijing, at the age of 98.

    On August 12, former Chinese Premier Zhou Rongji passed away in Beijing, at the age of 98, Xinhua reported.

    Mr. Zhu Rongji was born in 1928 in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in central China.

    He served as Chinese Premier from 1998 to 2003. He is known for his efforts to combat corruption, reform the centralized planned economy and restructure the state-owned enterprise sector.

    From 1991 to 1998, he served as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economy, before becoming Chinese Premier.

    He also played an important role in the negotiations to bring China into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001.

    Joining the WTO opens the door for the Chinese economy to integrate more deeply into the international market, while creating major changes for the country's economy.
