According to former President of Moldova and leader of the Socialist Party Igor Dodon, this is a way to both conceal the origin of the gas and profit from the people themselves.
Russian gas is still being supplied to Moldova, there is no change. Buying through a third country or an intermediary company cannot hide that fact, Dodon said in an interview with TASS.
According to him, the incumbent officials are deceiving the people by claiming to have refused to import gas from Russia to pursue energy independence. However, in reality, they still buy the right type of gas, only through a roundabout, at a higher price and through shady intermediaries.
This is an sophisticated corruption act that needs to be investigated by the prosecution, Dodon stressed.
The leaders of the Socialist Party also requested the disclosure of gas purchase prices and the adjustment of price lists for people. According to him, gas prices should be only at 10 Lei (about 0.6 USD)/m3, instead of the current 15 Lei (0.9 USD).
" whose pocket does that 5 advantages fall? Why is all information about gas contracts - agreements signed in taxes of the people - kept secret? - he asked asked severely.
Since 2021, Moldova has fallen into a spiral of an energy crisis. Gas prices have tripled in less than three years, prompting record inflation and widespread protests.
The opposition believes the underlying cause comes from the government's " mass with Russian gas" policy, when Moldova decided to cut off cooperation with Gazprom - Russia's energy giant.
Instead, Moldova currently imports gas from the European market, but through many intermediaries, causing prices to increase. In addition, the country's gas transportation system has also been handed over to Romania's vestMoldTransgaz company, contributing to higher transportation costs.
The current government has not yet responded officially to the above allegations.
