The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, on May 29, in Hanoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son presided over the introduction of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Deputy Director of Vietnam's Diplomatic and Candidate Academy to the position of Judge of the International Marine Law Court (ITLOS) for the term 2026 - 2035 with the diplomatic delegation of the countries in Hanoi.
Speaking at the introduction, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized the meaning of the United Nations Convention on the 1982 Maritime Law (UNCLOS), the Constitution for the Ocean, as the legal framework for adjusting all activities on the sea and the ocean and the role of ITLOS in protecting the integrity of the Convention.
Vietnam's first nomination of candidates to ITLOS is a decision of great significance, demonstrating Vietnam's consistent view of promoting international law and Vietnam's commitment to becoming an active member, contributing to the common work of the international community.
This nomination also demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to promoting multilateralism as well as gender equality and the role of women in international institutions.
Speaking with Ambassadors and Heads of Representative Agencies in Hanoi, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh shared her views, vision and strong commitment to promoting the rule of law at sea and in the ocean, and enforcing the law with impartiality and integrity.
The event was attended by many 80 Ambassadors, Heads of Representative Agencies, representatives of foreign ambassadors in Hanoi, domestic agencies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the discussion, countries highly appreciated Vietnam's nomination decision, the qualifications and experience of Vietnam's candidates and wished Vietnam success in this important nomination.
The introduction was held on the occasion of the 1 -year Vietnam officially introduced candidates at the International Law Court within the framework of the 34th National Conference of the International Law Convention in New York, USA and 125 years of establishing a permanent arbitration court in La or Dutch in June 2024.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh is one of the leading experts in the field of international law in Vietnam with an extensive knowledge base and rich practical experience in teaching, research and lecturing in the field of marine law.
Associate Professor, Dr. is currently an Arbitrator according to Appendix VII of UNCLOS and Vice President of the International Law Association of Asia.
The Associate Professor and Doctor has conducted many research in the field of maritime dispute resolution and organized many conferences and seminars on regional maritime security issues and the application of UNCLOS 1982, and is the author and co-author of many books and articles in prestigious international publications.
As a professional diplomatic sister, she has extensive experience in handling bilateral and multilateral issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.
