Russian gas exports hit peak, TurkStream targeted

Gazprom's Russian gas exports to Europe via the TurkStream pipeline peaked in February.

Russian gas exports in February via the TurkStream gas pipeline to Europe hit a record high of more than 55 million m3/day, according to Reuters calculations as of February 28.

European gas transport giant Entsog said that in February 2025, Russian gas exports via TurkStream will increase by 30.7% compared to the same period last year to 55.8 million m3/day. Compared to January 2025, the increase in February is 10%.

In total, Russian gas supplies via the TurkStream pipeline increased from 1.24 billion cubic meters in February 2024 to about 1.56 billion cubic meters in February 2025. In January 2025, Russian gas exports via TurkStream reached 1.57 billion cubic meters.

The 1,100-km long Black Sea gas pipeline is Russia's only gas export pipeline to Europe after gas transit through Ukraine was suspended from January 1, 2025 due to the expiration of the Ukraine-Russia transit agreement.

Gazprom data and Reuters calculations show that Russia will supply about 63.8 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe via various gas pipelines in 2022.

This figure decreased by 55.6% to 28.3 billion m3 in 2023 but increased again to about 32 billion m3 in 2024.

At its peak in 2018-2019, Russian gas exports to Europe reached between 175 billion cubic meters and 180 billion cubic meters.

As the only gas pipeline carrying gas from Russia to Europe at the moment, TurkStream has been continuously targeted.

Most recently, on March 1, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Russian air defense repelled an attack by three Ukrainian drones on a gas compressors in the Turkstream pipeline system.

The gas compresssion station attacked was the "Russkaya" station in the Krasnodar region, southern Russia.

Russian air defense forces shot down three Ukrainian drones at a safe distance from the air compressors.

"The gas compresssion station is currently transporting gas via the TurkStream pipeline under normal conditions," the Russian Defense Ministry informed.

Previously, on January 13, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Ukraine was looking to attack the gas compresssion plant with 9 drones.

After the latest attack on the first day of March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asked his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan to use all possible measures to prevent future attacks on the TurkStream pipeline and Foreign Minister Fidan affirmed that he would do so, according to a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Foreign Minister Lavrov had informed him about the attack on the TurkStream pipeline over the phone. Hungary receives Russian gas via Turkstream.

Foreign Minister Szijjarto noted that the operation of the Turkstream pipeline is very important for Hungary's energy security. He called on the European Union to maintain its commitment to ensure that the infrastructure related to the bloc of 27 countries will not be attacked in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
