The Independent reported that haunting images released by the US National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSB) last weekend showed the wreckage on the ocean floor.
The Boeing 737-200 cargo plane made an emergency landing off the coast of Hawaii's Oahu island on July 2. The wreckage was found about 3km west of Ewa Beach, Honolulu. Both crew members were rescued after the pilot crashed the plane into the water.
The NTSB said that parts of the crashed plane, such as the rear with both wings and the rear with both engines and the front of the plane, were found in water at depths of 110 and 128 meters. The depth was too large to permit divers to pick up the black box, but a team of investigators are planning to salvage the wreckage.
A side-scan sonar and remote control vehicles were used to find the plane. The NTSB said another plane that was fueled that night had been inspected and no abnormalities were found.
One of the two crew members on Transair 810 was taken to the hospital by helicopter after the plane landed, the other was rescued by boat. The crashed Boeing was manufactured in 1975.
The crew reported engine problems and was expected to return shortly after takeoff from Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu at 1:43 a.m. local time on July 2.
NTSB conducted more than a dozen interviews with the crew, and with staff at Transair and the Federal Aviation Administration. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
The 50-year-old pilot, who suffered a head injury, was discharged from the hospital earlier this week.
The main pilot and the supporting pilot were rescued by the US Coast Guard. pilots reported that a Boeing 737 engine was broken and there were signs that the plane was not high enough to return to Honolulu, forcing it to make an emergency landing at sea.
In the recording posted on LiveATC, the crew informed Honolulu of the problem: "We lost our number one engine. We will need fire department... We will also lose another engine. It's very hot," said a pilot.
Rhoades Aviation Inc is the operator. Transair is one of the largest cargo airlines in Hawaii, having been in operation since 1982.
