The Telegraph reported that on May 2, US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said that Washington is changing its contributory methods to negotiations and will no longer fly around the world to attend meetings.
According to Ms. Bruce, Washington will no longer take on an intermediary role in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In the current situation, both Russia and Ukraine must present and develop specific ideas to end the conflict. Its up to them to decide, Bruce told reporters.
In an interview with Fox News on May 1, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that the conflict in Ukraine is unlikely to end soon, and emphasized that this is the time for Moscow and Kiev to find an agreement themselves. Now the responsibility belongs to them to reach an agreement and end this fierce conflict, Vance said.
The statement comes as the Kremlin has expressed its willingness for direct negotiations, but has rejected a recent US peace proposal, citing that it does not include international recognition of the Russian controlled territories.
The move comes after the US signed a mineral deal with Ukraine with terms that were seen as more favorable than originally expected, while President Donald Trump is also believed to have approved the first arms deployment to Kiev since taking office.
For its part, Ukraine has determined to reject any form of recognition of Russian acquisitions.
The announcement marks a significant change in the US approach to the conflict, following a series of previous warnings that Washington would withdraw from its mediation role if there was no progress.
