Japan activates tsunami warning after 7.1 magnitude earthquake

    The strong earthquake shook Kyushu Island of Japan, reaching the highest level on the country's own earthquake scale.

    A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook southern Japan on July 28, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, and issued a tsunami warning.

    According to JMA, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit Kumamoto Prefecture of Japan. A tsunami warning with a wave height of 1m was issued after the earthquake.

    The Japanese government has issued emergency earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, all belonging to Kyushu Island in the south of the country.

    The agency said that vibrations were also measured at the highest possible level, i.e. level 7, on the Shindo scale for vibration levels in Japan alone.
