Traffic Police Department proposes to end borrowing the opposite lane to overtake vehicles

The Traffic Police Department proposes to change the traffic organization, not allowing borrowing the opposite lane to overtake vehicles.

On the afternoon of July 28, information from the Traffic Police Department (CSGT) - Ministry of Public Security said that at a recent working session between the Traffic Police Department and the Vietnam Road Administration on traffic organization, this unit proposed to change the traffic organization in the direction of no longer allowing vehicles to borrow the opposite lane to overtake vehicles as it is now.

According to the Traffic Police Department, statistics show that the act of overtaking by encroaching on the opposite lane is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents, accounting for an average of about 15% of the total causes of accidents.

The Traffic Police Department believes that in reality, on many two-way roads with broken centerlines (line 1), many drivers tend to encroach on the opposite lane to overtake vehicles in front instead of patiently moving in the correct lane. Gradually, this forms the habit of having vehicles in front in the same direction and trying to overtake.

According to the assessment of the Traffic Police Department, unsafe overtaking is quite common, even on curved roads, with limited visibility, slippery roads due to rain, or when vehicles are circulating on the opposite lane. These are potential situations for particularly serious traffic accidents.

To overcome the above situation, the Traffic Police Department proposed that in the new traffic organization plan, it is necessary to re-regulate vehicle overtaking, not allowing borrowing the opposite lane to overtake on narrow roads that do not ensure safety, steep mountain passes, winding roads or areas with limited visibility, especially at night.

According to the proposal, overtaking will be carried out by moving to the lane in the same direction or arranging separate overtaking lanes on eligible roads, instead of encroaching on the lane of vehicles going in the opposite direction.

In addition, to immediately handle potential unsafe points, the Traffic Police Department also proposed that the Vietnam Road Administration review and supplement continuous road centerlines at curved road sections, narrow roads and dangerous locations. Replacing broken lines with continuous lines will not allow vehicles to encroach on the opposite lane to overtake, thereby reducing the risk of head-on collisions.
