Mr. Mark Carney, 59, will succeed Mr. Justin Trudeau. As soon as he takes office, the new Canadian Prime Minister said he could work with US President Donald Trump in the context of the US threatening to impose strong tariffs that threaten the Canadian economy.
We respect President Trump. President Trump puts a number of very important issues first in his agenda. We understand his agenda. In many ways, my experience is similar to the president's. We both care about our country. But he knows, and from his years of experience, I know that we can find a common solution that will bring victory to both sides," Carney told reporters after taking office.
However, Mr. Carney did not plan to talk to US President Donald Trump immediately. Mr. Carney said he will visit London and Paris next week. Canada is looking to strengthen its alliances in Europe as its relationship with the US is at an unprecedented level.
When he became prime minister, Carney restructured his 24-member cabinet in response to Washington, cutting nearly half of his minister positions compared to Trudeau's time.
Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc will move to the international trade department and Innovation Minister Francois- Philippe Champagne will replace him as Finance Minister. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly remains in office.
