US vice presidential candidate responds to Iran attack on Israel

Ohio Senator J.D Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz face off in a US vice presidential debate.

The US vice presidential debate, hosted by CBS News and broadcast simultaneously on NBC, will begin at 9 p.m. on October 1, local time (8 a.m. October 2, Vietnam time) and is expected to last about 90 minutes with two commercial breaks.

The US vice presidential debate - the first time candidates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz faced off - took place at the CBS News headquarters in New York City. The debate was held without a studio audience.

The first question focused on the escalating conflict in the Middle East, with both US vice presidential candidates in the 2024 US presidential election voicing support for Israel but remaining divided on how the US should approach the Iran issue.

Asked whether he would support or oppose a preemptive Israeli strike on Iran, Mr. Walz stressed the importance of stable leadership.

Mr. Walz pointed out that Ms. Kamala Harris has the ability to "provide steady leadership" and understands that "allies matter."

Meanwhile, Mr. Vance used the opening portion of his allotted time to answer questions by talking about his upbringing. Mr. Vance then said that Mr. Trump had established “effective deterrence.” As for a preemptive strike, the Republican vice presidential nominee noted that it would depend on Israel’s wishes.

In response, Mr. Walz pointed to some of Mr. Trump's policies on Iran, including withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal.

The opening question of the US vice presidential debate was asked after Iran launched hundreds of missiles at Israel on the night of October 1.
