PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has just chaired a meeting at the headquarters of the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Human Resources, the government of West Java province, the Indonesian National Police, PSSI and the Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Center (PPKGBK).
At the meeting, Mr. Erick Thohir expressed his support for head coach John Herdman in the goal of bringing the Indonesian team to compete for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 championship.
According to Mr. Thohir, FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place from September 21 to October 6, coinciding with FIFA Days. This helps the Indonesian team to call up the best players, including players playing abroad.
Looking at the FIFA ASEAN Cup, this tournament has been scheduled for September and October 2026. With such a schedule, surely all the best players can play," Mr. Erick Thohir was quoted by Bola.
PSSI Chairman believes that the ability to use the strongest force will create conditions for the Indonesian team to aim for high achievements at the tournament.
PSSI of course hopes the team can achieve the best results. However, there are still unpredictable factors, such as players may get injured. These are issues that we must consider and prepare response plans," said Mr. Erick Thohir.
FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is a regional tournament held in September and October this year. With the tournament being within FIFA Days, participating teams have conditions to call up a stronger force than tournaments not in FIFA's international schedule.
Indonesia is placing high hopes on coach John Herdman after the Canadian strategist was appointed to lead the team. The goal set by PSSI is to compete for the championship, in the context that Indonesian football continues to promote the plan to improve the quality of the team.
For the Vietnamese team, Indonesia is also one of the notable opponents at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. PSSI's determination to use the strongest force may make the competition at the regional tournament more fierce.
