NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

According to experts, Ho Chi Minh City has many advantages to take the lead in technology and promote the development of the sports economy, but there are still many points that need to be resolved.

Major goals of Ho Chi Minh City sports

Statistics in 2024 from the Department of Culture - Sports of Ho Chi Minh City show that athletes from this locality have won 1,440 Gold Medals (HCV), 1,174 Silver Medals (HCB) and 1,293 Bronze Medals (HCD) in national tournaments. At the international level, HCMC athletes won 398 medals, including 184 Gold Medals. This is the foundation for Ho Chi Minh City Sports to confidently aim for major goals in 2025 and the following years.

Sharing at the recent Workshop: "HCMC Sports reaches international standards - welcoming technology - Creating a sports economy", Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Viet Bao, Ho Chi Minh City University of Sports and Physical Training, said that Resolution 98/2023/QH15 and Project 478 create opportunities for the development of physical education and sports in Ho Chi Minh City but still face many challenges in terms of finance, infrastructure and management mechanisms.

According to Project 478, Ho Chi Minh City Sports aims for the goals in 2025, 2030 and 2035. Accordingly, the locality focuses on investing in 20 key sports; leading the overall medal and ranking table at National Sports Festivals and National Phu Dong Sports Festivals; maintaining its position as one of the leading national units, striving to be in the Top strong cities in the ASEAN region...

Ho Chi Minh City aims to win 25-30 gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games and increase to 45-50 gold medals at the 2035 SEA Games. In the Olympic arena, Ho Chi Minh City strives to win 2-3 gold medals at the 2030 Olympics and 3-4 gold medals in 2035.

Sports economic development problem

According to Dr. Vu Thai Hong - Director, Institute of Science and Technology, Sports Economics is one of the industries with great potential, contributing greatly to the GDP of many developed countries in the world and the average annual growth rate of the sports market reaches 5.2%.

In particular, the global sports equipment market will have revenue of about 43.72 billion USD in 2023; from 2024 to 2028, it will grow at an annual rate of 6.35%. The sports equipment market in Southeast Asia has a growth rate of 6.45%, exceeding the global average.

In particular, the economic value of Vietnam's sports is estimated at 300 million USD and there is still many prospects for development due to the large population, the rate of sports participants is up to nearly 30%.

Mr. Hong commented that Ho Chi Minh City has outstanding potential for sports development, capable of building a truly sports-economic industry, practically contributing to the overall growth of the city.

Ho Chi Minh City is the economic locomotive of the country, attracting many foreign investment, the sports industry is properly cared for, the movement develops strongly in both breadth and depth. The rate of people who practice sports regularly reaches nearly 36.4% of the population, sports families account for nearly 29%.

Talking to Lao Dong, Ms. Dao Thi Ngoc Hoa - Head of Communications, Marketing & International Relations Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) - said that, from 2025 onwards, Ho Chi Minh City can exploit 5 major potentials in sports and sports development: Professional sports growth and commercialization of the tournament; developing sports movement and sports tourism; expand digital sports business model and eSports; Socialization of investment and sports infrastructure; Exploiting television copyrights and sports content.

HCMC has great potential thanks to its large population, high average income and strong interest in sports. In particular, major brands such as Nike, Adidas, FIFA... are stepping up investment in the sports community here, said Ms. Hoa.

It is expected that the rate of people practicing sports regularly in Ho Chi Minh City will reach over 38% by 2025 and exceed 42% by 2030.

According to Ms. Hoa, to effectively develop the sports economy, the sports industry in Ho Chi Minh City needs to specialize in exploiting trade, copyright, marketing and building a sustainable ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Dr. Vu Thai Hong said that in order for sports to truly become an economic sector, Ho Chi Minh City needs to perfect institutions, attract investment, develop markets, improve State management, train human resources and improve infrastructure. Combining sports with tourism, applying technology and organizing international events will be a long-term driving force for development.
