With an area of about 116 hectares, Sa Huynh salt field (Sa Huynh ward) is the largest salt granary in the Central region. Salt making is the main livelihood of thousands of local salt farmers.
Last year, salt prices fluctuated around 1.5 million VND/ton. However, since the 2026 Lunar New Year, salt prices have doubled, reaching 3 million VND/ton.
According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Chanh, Director of Sa Huynh Salt Production Cooperative 2, the record high salt prices as they are now are due to strong consumption demand, while the amount of salt in Sa Huynh is still very small. The reason is that the storm at the end of 2025 swept away thousands of tons of salt from salt farmers, including about 800 tons of salt from dozens of cooperative member households.

Also according to Mr. Nguyen Huu Chanh, salt prices usually increase before entering the new salt season. However, due to the lack of drying yards and storage warehouses, many salt farmers are forced to sell salt immediately after harvest at low prices. Therefore, besides the large dependence on weather, this is also a problem that needs the companionship and support of the State for salt farmers to have storage warehouses and salt storage points, thereby improving the quality and value of products.
From there, contributing to helping salt farmers stick with the profession, bringing the Sa Huynh salt brand to develop more sustainably.
