In more than 30 years of attachment to medicine, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Toan Thang is known as one of the Vietnamese scientists who early and persistently pursued the field of stem cells, a science considered to play an important role in modern regenerative medicine.
Born in a medical environment, he soon chose the path of research instead of just stopping at clinical practice. From the early years of his career, he was interested in the self-healing ability of the human body, especially the mechanism of tissue regeneration. This thinking later became the foundation orienting his entire scientific path.
In the early 1990s, after completing doctoral training, he both participated in treatment work at the hospital and began to approach research directions on cell histology and biology. This was a period that laid important foundations for later scientific works, when the field of stem cells was still very new in Vietnam.
International research turning point and the development of regenerative medicine
In the mid-1990s, Assoc. Prof. Phan Toan Thang had the opportunity to access an international research environment, including working in Singapore, one of the leading biomedical centers in Asia. Here, he focused on in-depth research on stem cells and their application in tissue regeneration and treatment of body damage.
This stage helped him broaden his scientific thinking, access new technologies in molecular medicine, and form independent research directions on the application of stem cells from adult human tissue. This is considered an important turning point in his research career.
In the early 2000s, he continued to participate in many international research groups in the field of regenerative medicine. Some of his research works were published in the international scientific community, focusing on the ability to apply stem cells in the treatment of complex lesions.
Not only researching, he also participates in training and guiding the young generation of doctors and new scientists in the field of applied biology, contributing to building a human resource foundation for this still new science industry.
Returning to Vietnam and the challenges of applied science
After many years of working abroad, Assoc. Prof. Phan Toan Thang returned to Vietnam with the desire to bring research results into domestic medical practice. He focused on developing applications of stem cells in the treatment and restoration of damaged tissues.

However, according to him, scientific research in Vietnam still faces many difficulties, especially in terms of financial mechanisms, long-term investment and research environment. Many topics have potential but lack resources to deploy to the clinical application stage.
He believes that science cannot develop without a synchronous ecosystem, including support policies, financial resources and international cooperation. This is a key factor for biomedical research to go from laboratory to practical application.
However, he still persistently pursues the chosen direction, and participates in many international cooperation projects to promote the application of regenerative medicine in Vietnam. According to him, this is a field with great potential in the future, especially when the demand for treatment of chronic diseases and tissue damage is increasing.

Throughout his journey of more than three decades, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Toan Thang has not only been a researcher but also a person who contributed to bringing the field of stem cells closer to the practice of Vietnamese medicine. His efforts reflect the process of integration and development of Vietnamese science in the context of globalization.
