Gold price forecast
Gold prices fell slightly on Monday after a positive US jobs report reinforced expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would raise interest rates this month, while investors are waiting for important inflation figures to get more clues about monetary policy prospects.
Spot gold prices fell nearly 1%, to 4,395.2 USD/ounce at 6:30 PM (Vietnam time). US gold futures for December delivery fell 0.2% to 4,466.90 USD/ounce, amid low trading volume due to the US market holiday.
In today's trading session, gold prices received buying power twice when falling below 4,400 USD/ounce, much lower than the important support zone around 4,320 USD/ounce, while selling power continued to appear when the price exceeded 4,500 USD/ounce.
According to CME's FedWatch tool, traders currently believe the probability of the Fed raising interest rates at next week's policy meeting is 58%, up from 50% before the jobs report was released on Friday.
The US producer price index (PPI) data is expected to be released on Thursday, while the consumer price index (CPI) will be released the next day.
Concerns about inflation remain high as attacks targeting sea transport activities at the weekend pushed oil prices up. Meanwhile, Iran said it would announce a new restricted zone in the Gulf in the coming days, along with a map of a new shipping route passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Although gold is often seen as an inflation hedging tool, higher interest rates tend to reduce the attractiveness of gold - a non-performing asset to investors.
