Gold price forecast
Gold prices are entering a period of strong fluctuations as the market continuously adjusts expectations for inflation and US monetary policy. In the short term, the precious metal still risks being pressured if the USD and US government bond yields remain high.
The latest data shows that the US producer price index (PPI) in July did not increase compared to the previous month, lower than the forecast of 0.2%. Core PPI increased by 0.2%, also lower than expected. However, these figures are not enough for the market to believe that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will quickly move to ease monetary policy.
In addition, the yield of 10-year US government bonds is still fluctuating around the high zone, increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold - an asset that does not provide periodic interest rates. Investors are currently continuing to monitor US economic data, especially retail sales, to assess consumer health and the possibility of the Fed adjusting interest rates in the near future.
Technically, the 4,448 USD/ounce zone is considered a noteworthy resistance level. If this zone is surpassed, gold prices may head towards higher levels around 4,575 USD and 4,666 USD/ounce. Conversely, if losing the 4,332 USD/ounce zone, selling pressure may pull prices back to support zones around 4,262 USD, even 4,205 USD/ounce.
Although short-term prospects are still volatile, UBS - a major Swiss bank - still maintains a positive outlook for gold in the medium and long term. UBS strategists forecast that gold prices are likely to approach 5,000 USD/ounce in the first half of 2027.
According to UBS, one of the important drivers is the possibility of real interest rates falling as inflation gradually cools down and the Fed may resume its easing cycle in 2027. Lower interest rates may also put pressure on the USD, thereby improving gold's attractiveness.
In addition, the demand for gold from central banks continues to be seen as a significant "support". UBS forecasts that the amount of gold purchased by central banks in 2026 may reach about 750-1,000 tons. Along with capital flows into gold ETF funds and shelter demand from geopolitical risks, these factors may continue to support gold price trends in the long term.
