Gold price forecast
World gold prices are receiving significant support after US July inflation data showed that price pressure showed signs of cooling down. The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 0.1% compared to the previous month and 3.4% compared to the same period. Core CPI increased by 0.2% in the month and 2.5% compared to a year ago.
This development reduced expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would raise interest rates at the September meeting. The probability of the market placing bets on a 25 basis point increase has dropped to about 40%, from nearly 48% previously. The yield of 10-year US government bonds also fell to around 4.7%. This is a favorable factor for gold because the precious metal does not yield.
However, gold's room to increase still faces some resistance forces. US inflation is still high, while energy prices continue to be an important variable for monetary policy. WTI oil prices are fluctuating around 83 USD/barrel, while Brent oil is in the 89 USD/barrel range. If energy prices remain high, inflationary pressure may make the Fed more cautious in easing policy.
Besides the interest rate factor, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to strengthen safe-haven demand. Transportation through the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb is also under great pressure, increasing concerns about energy supply. This development creates a two-way impact: geopolitical risk supports gold, but expensive oil may maintain inflationary pressure and prolong the high-interest rate environment.
Technically, the 4,430-4,492 USD/ounce zone is a noteworthy resistance area. If it surpasses and maintains above this zone, gold prices may head towards the 4,500 USD/ounce mark, and further to about 4,598 USD/ounce.
In the opposite direction, the 4,360 USD/ounce zone plays a near supporting role. If this threshold is lost, gold prices are at risk of falling to 4, 299 USD/ounce and deeper to 4, 224 USD/ounce.
In the short term, the gold trend is therefore still leaning towards positive, but the possibility of strong fluctuations is still high. Investors will continue to monitor Fed policy signals, bond yields, USD developments, oil prices and geopolitical situation to determine the next direction of precious metals.
