Gold price forecast
World gold prices are regaining momentum thanks to the weakening USD and US inflation data showing signs of cooling down. However, the short-term outlook for the precious metal is still not really clear as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) maintains a cautious stance, while US Treasury bond yields continue to linger at high levels.
Newly released data shows that the US economy slowed down in the second quarter of 2026. GDP only increased by 1.5% year-on-year, lower than the previous quarter's 2.1% and market forecasts. This development increases the possibility that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged in the near future, thereby supporting non-performing assets such as gold.
In addition, the June Personal Consumption Price Index (PCE) also sent positive signals. Total PCE decreased by 0.1% compared to the previous month, while core PCE only increased by 0.1%. For the year, PCE and core PCE inflation fell to 3.7% and 3.3% respectively. This data weakened the USD, creating conditions for gold prices to recover after selling pressure appeared immediately after the Fed meeting.
However, inflation is still significantly higher than the Fed's target of 2%. The US labor market also maintains a relatively stable state as the number of jobless claims is lower than forecast. This is the basis for the Fed to continue to prioritize controlling prices and not rush to switch to loose monetary policy.
Notably, the Fed has just kept interest rates in the 3.50-3.75% range, but three members support an additional 0.25 percentage points increase. This shows that the risk of interest rates continuing to remain high is still present. The yield of 10-year US Treasury bonds around the 4.6% range also increases the opportunity cost of holding gold.
On the supporting side, US-Iran tensions and risks to transportation activities in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea continue to boost safe-haven demand. However, if the conflict causes oil prices to rise sharply, inflationary pressure may return and limit gold's upward room.
Technically, maintaining above the 4,101.1 USD/ounce mark may help gold prices consolidate the recovery trend, towards the 4,114 USD/ounce zone. Conversely, if it falls below 4,028.4 USD/ounce, the price is likely to retreat to test the support zone near 3,995.2 USD/ounce. In the short term, the market is likely to continue to fluctuate according to US economic data, interest rate expectations, USD and geopolitical developments.
