The 2026 Tet movie season is gradually closing with impressive revenue figures, considered one of the most successful Tet seasons of Vietnamese cinema in many years. For the first time in a decade, up to three Vietnamese films released in theaters from the 1st day of Tet all exceeded the 100 billion VND mark, creating a vibrant box office picture and opening up many expectations for the film market this year.
According to data from Box Office Vietnam, as of now, the movie "Thỏ ơi!!" is leading the box office with revenue of more than 423 billion VND, becoming the most outstanding work of this year's Tet movie season. Behind is "Nhà ba tôi một phòng" with more than 110 billion VND, while "Báu vật trời cho" has officially surpassed the 100 billion VND mark after many weeks of release. "Mùi phở" alone recorded revenue of more than 38 billion VND.
This result is considered a positive sign for the Vietnamese film market. In recent years, the Tet film season has often been a fierce "race" between producers, but not every year many works achieve hundreds of billions of VND in revenue. The fact that three films both surpassed this milestone, and all premiered from the first day of Tet, shows that the attractiveness of domestic cinema is being significantly improved.
Another notable point is that this year's film season did not record any cases of works having to withdraw from theaters early or postpone screenings right when the box office race just started. This partly reflects the more thorough preparation from producers as well as the diversity of content and genres to reach many different audience groups.
After the Tet season, the Vietnamese film market is expected to continue to be vibrant. During the Hung Kings Commemoration holiday and April 30 holiday, it is expected that about 5 Vietnamese films will be released in theaters. In addition, the National Day of Vietnam September 2nd is also chosen by many producers as the release time, with plans for about 4 works to participate in the box office race.
According to shares from some filmmakers in the industry, 2026 is expected to be a boom year for Vietnamese cinema when more than 70 projects are planning to be released in theaters. This figure shows a significant increase in film production, and also reflects investors' confidence in market potential.
However, along with the increase in quantity, the problem of content quality, distribution strategy and box office competition will also become fiercer. Experts believe that if filmmakers continue to improve scripts, improve production quality and diversify genres, Vietnamese cinema can completely maintain positive growth momentum in the coming time.
