“Hitman 2” continues the story of Jun (Kwon Sang Woo), a former spy, who is now framed by the NIS as the culprit after a terrorist attack similar to the case in his webtoon.
After its official release on January 22 in Korea, the film has continuously set records at the domestic box office. According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “Hitman 2” has maintained the No. 1 position at the box office for 9 consecutive days (from January 26 to February 3).
As of the afternoon of February 3, the film had attracted 1.96 million views, surpassing “Dark Nuns” - a film starring Song Hye Kyo. After its release on January 24, the film reached 1.43 million views.
According to the Korea Times, the fact that “Hitman 2” won the top spot on the Lunar New Year race in Korea shows that the film has won over audiences in terms of content and acting.
In addition to the humorous details, meticulous staging, and tight character development, the film scores points with the combination of the three actors Kwon Sang Woo, Jung Joon Ho, and Lee Yi Kyung.
According to Korean newspapers, movies that combine action and comedy elements are always loved by many audiences, chosen to watch with their families during the holidays. The fact that “Hitman 2” was released right on Tet holiday when people are resting has contributed to the film’s revenue at the box office.
On the other hand, the male lead Kwon Sang Woo's sincere and unconventional promotional efforts for the film were also highly appreciated. For example, during the fan meeting event before the film's release, Kwon Sang Woo became the center of attention with his actions.
At first, the actor said, “I didn’t want to be weak and say, ‘Please watch this movie,’” but then he surprised everyone by getting down on his knees and saying, “I’m really desperate. I want to beat ‘Dark Nuns’ and ‘Secret: Untold Melody’ (2 movies released at the same time as ‘Hitman 2’).”
Or later, when a YouTuber known for reviewing dramas and movies posted a critical review of his film, Kwon Sang Woo left a comment saying “Let's watch... until the final score” showing the male star's confidence in his work.
Previously, the actor revealed that his dream is to become an actor whose films have achieved box office revenue of over 3 million views. He also wishes to appear in many comedy-action projects to bring the audience as many experiences as possible.
“I think it’s the best way to show my gratitude to those who pay to watch the film. Rolling around and sweating on set is my own satisfaction in giving my all to the audience,” the Korean star said.
