In the first days of the new year, the Korean box office witnessed intense competition between new works in many genres - from mysterious horror, to romantic love, action comedy.
Contrary to initial expectations about Song Hye Kyo's return to cinema after more than a decade, the movie "Dark Nuns" could not hold the top spot at the domestic box office.
According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), “Dark Nuns” sold 1.05 million tickets during the holiday, bringing the total number of tickets sold to 1.18 million, earning 11.5 billion won (199 billion VND).
In the film, Song Hye Kyo plays the role of Sister Junia.
Although the actress's role was considered to have broken the traditional model, with rude actions and language, even having to practice smoking for 6 months, the boring script, lack of depth, and sensitive dialogue made "Dark Nuns" a "disaster" movie.
This is also the reason why, although the film initially had a high number of pre-booked tickets, leading for 3 days (from January 24-26), the number of viewers coming to the theater decreased significantly later.
Meanwhile, “Hitman 2” - the sequel to the 2020 hit action comedy, which attracted more than 2.4 million views, made an impressive comeback.
The film topped the Korean box office during the Lunar New Year holiday. It sold 1.268 million tickets (from January 25 to January 30), accounting for 38.6% of ticket sales, bringing the current total to 1.51 million tickets, earning 14.4 billion won (VND 248.8 billion).
Part 2 of the film continues the story of Jun (Kwon Sang Woo) - a former spy - who is now framed by the NIS as the culprit, after a terrorist attack similar to a similar case in his webtoon (online comic).
According to Korean newspapers, the film still has the same humorous style as Stephen Chow's films. The elaborate staging, tight character development, and good coordination between the three actors Kwon Sang Woo, Jung Joon Ho, and Lee Yi Kyung are plus points.
It is known that after "bombing" the domestic box office, next March, "Hitman 2" will be released to Vietnamese audiences.
Ranked third at the Korean box office is the fantasy romance “Secret: Untold Melody” – a remake of the 2007 Taiwanese (Chinese) film “Secret”. The film stars D.O. and Won Jin Ah, and has attracted 191,801 viewers.
The movie “Harbin” (Cap Nhi Tan) released on December 24, 2024 is currently ranked 4th at the Korean box office, attracting an additional 221,000 tickets during the Lunar New Year, bringing the total number of tickets sold to 4.8 million.
