Revival of the Film Production Industry
In July 2024, the Hanoi Film and Television Center (under Hanoi Television and Radio Broadcasting Station) announced the production of a special film project "For the Love of Hanoi" consisting of 2 television films, one of which is titled "Hanoi in Your Eyes" (directed by Dao Thanh Hung) belonging to the social psychological genre, telling the story of 5 girls representing 5 different personalities but sharing a love for Hanoi; the other film is titled "Milk Order" (directed by Nguyen Tat Kien) belonging to the detective genre, telling the story of the anti-crime efforts of Hanoi's police officers.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Khiem - General Director, General Editor of Hanoi Television and Radio Broadcasting Station - made a statement when awarding the decision to establish the film team: "Hanoi is the source of inspiration for many art forms: Music, film, poetry... So, Hanoi Television and Radio Broadcasting Station - a part of Hanoi's cultural institutions - has no reason not to become a part of Hanoi's cultural development, no reason not to create and produce content contributing to the development of Hanoi's film technology."
This event marks the revival of the television film production industry in the capital city. In the 1990s, Hanoi Television and Radio Broadcasting Station was quite famous for its film production. Many television series produced by this unit, such as "Red River Song", "Living Forever with the Capital", "Wave at the Bottom of the River" or purchased copyrights like "Bao Thanh Thien" created a positive impact on the audience.
Too Many Advantages, Any Industry Wants to Develop
Experts say that Hanoi has many strengths to develop the cultural industry: A system of historical relics, cultural heritage, traditional crafts, diverse cuisine to develop cultural tourism; in 2019, Hanoi officially joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of design, and as a result, a series of industrial heritage sites, old factories, have become attractive cultural destinations; the field of performing arts has many notable events.
However, it is also because of having many advantages that the development of Hanoi's cultural industry has been somewhat scattered, leading to a lack of focus and direction. Hanoi wants to develop the design and innovation industry and has invested heavily. Hanoi wants to develop cultural tourism, cuisine, and in the near future, the film and television industry.
Referring to the lessons learned from some other countries with a developed cultural industry in the Asian region, we can see that there is a relatively clear distribution. Vietnam's film industry is very developed, mainly concentrated in Hanoi, where there is a long-standing and prestigious film festival, and many professional training centers.
Director Nguyen Huu Tuan - who has been training for 6 months in Busan - said: "Busan not only provides infrastructure but also has all the necessary human resources and networking support to make a film. In my observation, many screenwriters, directors... from all over Korea and some other Asian countries have converged in Busan to work."
While developing in a scattered manner, people have not yet seen the connection and support between the cultural industries in the capital city like the spirit of Resolution 09 "to develop the cultural industry to promote the development of other industries and fields". Also, referring to the lesson of Korea, their film production industry has promoted and supported the development of many industries such as tourism, cosmetics, some industries such as car and phone manufacturing...
Also according to Resolution 09, Hanoi's specific target is to focus on developing industries and products with existing advantages such as: Cultural tourism, handicrafts, performing arts, design, cuisine, software and games; and pay attention to developing industries: Advertising, architecture, film and television, radio broadcasting, publishing, fashion... it can be seen that Hanoi's priority in the current period. To develop the cultural industry effectively, investment should be focused, based on clearly identifying the strengths of one's own goals.
