Artists from many generations participate in reality TV
When former athlete Thuy Hien appeared at the Sister Who Makes Wave 2024 program, many singers surrounded her and asked who she was. Many young artists did not know her and had not heard much about the sport that turned Thuy Hien into the "golden girl of wushu".
Only Hau Hoang shared that Thuy Hien is the idol of... her parents. Because they love Thuy Hien, Hau Hoang's parents named their two daughters Thuy Hien and Thuy Hau (Hau Hoang's nickname).
That is a typical story about the age gap of the artists and athletes participating in Sister Who Makes Wave this season. The generation of singers like Phuong Thanh, My Linh, Thu Phuong may be 20 years older than the younger generation of singers like Hoang Yen Chibi. But when on air, they still call each other sister - brother.
Airing in parallel with Sister Who Makes Wave 2024 is the program that is creating attraction, Our Song - Our Song. The program has the participation of singers from 6X, 7X, 8X to Gen Z. Backstage, Thanh Lam always calls Orange "child" and calls herself "aunt". But on stage, Orange sometimes "messily addresses" Thanh Lam as "sister" and "aunt".
Thanh Lam was born in 1969, while Orange was born in 1997. The age gap between them is nearly 30. On the other team, Thu Minh was born in 1977 while Lyly was born in 1996, Vu Thao My was born in 1997.
Previously, in reality TV shows and music game shows that caused a stir such as Call Me by Fire or Say Hi Brother, there were also huge age differences between artists.
In Call Me by Fire, the generation of People's Artist Tu Long and Bang Kieu were born in 1973 while the younger generation like Soobin Hoang Son was born in 1992, nearly 20 years apart.
In Say Hi Brother, the oldest is Isaac born in 1988, the youngest is Captain born in 2003, Rhyder born in 2001. The story between Isaac and Rhyder was widely shared when Say Hi Brother aired.
When Rhyder was very young, he loved Isaac and wanted to pursue a music career like “Uncle Isaac”. By chance, he had the chance to meet “Uncle Isaac” and the famous band 365 at that time. Rhyder, then a boy named Quang Anh, asked to take a souvenir photo.
This photo was reposted by the audience when Rhyder stood on stage with Isaac in Say Hi Brother and called Isaac "brother".
Generational "war"
As reality TV shows exploded on the airwaves, many collaborative performances between famous 7X generation artists and young Gen Z artists were widely shared.
At Our Song – Our Song, the performances of People’s Artist Thanh Lam and Orange are always praised. Most recently, “Ao moi Ca Mau” with its folk melody brought Thanh Lam and Orange a special performance. The song combines the sweet river song melody with modern rap. People’s Artist Thanh Lam impressed with her folk song-like singing, along with Orange’s vibrant rap.
In Anh trai say hi, MC Tran Thanh said something like, artists with names and positions like Isaac when having to compete with juniors, including brand new faces that no one knows, the former 365 member himself also has to endure a lot of pressure. If he doesn't do well and is surpassed by his juniors, the public will question Isaac's past successes.
Reality has shown that the "war" between generations of artists on the same stage has been "resolved" through elaborately staged group performances, where each generation and each artist demonstrates their own abilities and strengths.
The younger generation like Orange, Lyly... when standing on the same stage with "icons" like Thanh Lam, Thu Minh is also a source of pride. The generation of artists who have become famous, have been able to renew themselves, try their hand at choreography, rap, and the modern musical thinking of Gen Z, which also gives them more experience and more color on their career journey.
Above all, the performances combined from famous artists of many different generations are bringing a new breeze to the audience, creating great attraction in the music listening and performance market.
