Set in 1997 with a mysterious disappearance in an elevator, the film revolves around the investigation journey of police figures through many generations. From the initial disjointed clues, the case gradually becomes a prolonged series of investigations, forcing subsequent generations to continue searching for the truth for nearly two decades.
Director Vuong Chi said that from the beginning, the crew determined that the focus was not on creating a purely "dramatic crime-solving" work, but on focusing on building the depth of the characters. Accordingly, the case only plays the role of "backbone", while the main story is the journey of change, inner struggle and the connection between the characters in the process of pursuing justice.
In the film, Phan Viet Minh plays Ha Vien Hang - a police officer with a strong personality, somewhat edgy, different from the calm and intelligent image he once showed in "White Night Hunt". The character is built with many layers of psychology, both showing decisiveness in work and showing personal hidden corners.
In the opposite direction, Vuong Hac De plays Phung Phuong Huc, appearing in three different stages: a rookie in 1997, a criminal team leader in 2002 and a middle-aged teacher in 2015. The continuous transition between stages requires actors to adjust from appearance to expression, from dialogue rhythm to psychological state, in order to create a clear distinction between periods.
One of the notable points of "Confession in the Night" is the parallel organization of three timelines: 1997, 2002 and 2015. To increase differentiation, the crew uses many characteristic elements of each stage such as means, costumes, electronic equipment, as well as the language of life.
In particular, the image is processed in three different tones to reflect the changes of the times. 1997 used warm colors, evoking the feeling of incandescent lights with dark and old spaces. The 2002 period switched to a brighter tone, while 2015 has neutral, modern colors, reflecting the development of urban areas and lighting technology.
Before "Lời thú tội trong đêm", the Youku platform has recorded success with many works of the same genre, in which "Bạch dạ truy hung" was once considered a milestone of the detective film genre. With an approach leaning towards characters and a multi-layered storytelling structure, the new film is expected to continue to maintain the appeal of the crime film genre, while expanding the depth of content in the modern television context.
