The cause of the 2.1 million cubic meter lake collapse has not been announced

THANH QUỲNH |

Dak Nong - For more than a year, authorities have yet to announce the cause of the collapse of a reservoir containing 2.1 million cubic meters of water.

On January 6, Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Nong province, informed about the investigation into the cause of the collapse of Dak N'Ting reservoir, which contains 2.1 million m3 of water. This reservoir is located in Quang Son commune (Dak Glong district).

According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, up to now, the authorities have completed sampling, analysis and completed the inspection report related to the landslide incident at the above project.

Based on the inspection report, the consulting unit and relevant parties complete the incident cause assessment report as well as determine the causes of the parties.

"This is very complicated, we have to get feedback from the council members in the appraisal team, especially the consultants, to ensure accuracy and objectivity" - Mr. Pham Tuan Anh said.

According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, on November 30, 2025, the unit will complete the report on the cause of the collapse, as well as determine the responsibilities of the relevant parties.

The Dak N’Ting reservoir project has a capacity of over 2.1 million m3. The project’s goal is to provide irrigation water for 680 hectares of crops and for the daily life of about 1,000 surrounding households.

The project has a total investment of more than 137 billion VND, invested by the Dak Nong Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board.

In late July and early August 2023, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, a large, prolonged slide appeared on the dam surface of the Dak N'Ting reservoir.

Due to the complicated landslide situation, the People's Committee of Dak Nong province has declared a natural disaster emergency at the Dak N'Ting reservoir project.

By November 2023, the People's Committee of Dak Nong province established an investigation team (chaired by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) for the Dak N'Ting reservoir incident (Expertise Team 522).

Then, Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee assigned Appraisal Team 522 to conduct an appraisal of the cause of the construction incident.

Along with defining the responsibilities of relevant units and individuals, Team 522 also has the task of advising the Provincial People's Committee on solutions.

However, it was not until mid-July 2024 that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Nong province found a unit that agreed to participate in the inspection consultancy.
