Green transition in many transport sectors

Xuyên Đông |

In order to implement green transition , the transport industry is making efforts to implement many solutions, including converting to green energy, reducing carbon and methane emissions to contribute to environmental protection.

Road efforts to become greener

According to statistics, roads account for the largest proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for more than 80% in the transport sector. Therefore, road units have made great efforts to improve the environment recently. Mr. Thai Ho Phuong - Director of the Center for Urban Traffic Management and Operation, Hanoi Department of Transport - said that the city aims to achieve 100% of buses using electricity and clean energy by 2035.

Currently, Hanoi has 1,905 subsidized buses, of which 281 use clean energy (139 CNG buses and 142 electric buses) and over 1,200 meet Euro 4 emission standards or higher. To date, the operation of electric bus routes has contributed to reducing 36,000 tons of CO2.

Regarding the electric bus charging station system, there are currently only 2 installation locations of VinBus Ecological Transport Services Company Limited, serving 10 routes. Each charging station has 32 and 39 charging posts, respectively, with a capacity of 120 - 150kWh, meeting the need to charge 100% of the battery of the entire vehicle.

In order to make the green transition, Hanoi proposed several solutions including thoroughly grasping and propagating the roadmap, policies, and benefits of vehicle conversion; perfecting the norms and unit prices for green buses; applying temporary norms and unit prices to order green buses while waiting for official issuance; investing in electric bus infrastructure, fuel-efficient vehicles, etc.

Mr. Le Hoan - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center said that Ho Chi Minh City currently has 120 bus routes with more than 13,000 trips/day, transporting about 250,000 passengers/day.

Of these, there are 546 electric/CNG vehicles (accounting for 24.7% of the total number of vehicles), 581 vehicles with less than 8 years of use (accounting for 26.3%) and 1,628 vehicles with 8 years or more.

Regarding the orientation of public passenger transport development, from 2025 to 2029, priority will be given to converting buses to electric vehicles. During the transition period of the conversion roadmap, it is possible to invest in and replace buses using CNG fuel on existing bus routes.

Seaports, airports, railways all transformed

Discussing the greening roadmap for seaports, Lieutenant Colonel Vu Anh Tuan - Deputy Head of the Green Port Steering Committee of Tan Cang Corporation - said that Tan Cang Corporation is the largest port operator in Vietnam with nearly 60% market share.

The green transition has been carried out by Tan Cang for a long time. Almost all diesel equipment in cranes and cars has been converted to electric. The old car engines in the early period were upgraded to meet Euro 3 standards and now Euro 5.

The Corporation has also installed over 400,000m2 of solar panels, with a capacity of harvesting about 80MW of solar power. Most of the internal road transport activities have been converted to waterway transport.

Looking at the overall perspective, Mr. Luu Quang Thin - Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Transport - said that by 2030, the whole country will have about 5,000km of expressways. In the coming time, units will continue to invest in expressways combined with synchronous investment in electric charging infrastructure, providing green energy on expressways to support the conversion of road vehicles.

Regarding railways, we will invest in new routes and electrification to connect important seaports and airports; renovate and upgrade existing railway lines to synchronize infrastructure using electricity and green energy.

With inland waterways, modernize main ports and specialized ports, encouraging investment in ports and green transport routes with a total investment of projects by 2030 of about 10.8 billion USD; by 2050 of about 4.48 billion USD.

For maritime, important shipping routes will be renovated and upgraded. Continue to develop international gateway port areas of Lach Huyen, Ba Ria - Vung Tau; call for investment in Can Gio, Van Phong ports, Tran De ports to serve the Mekong Delta, in which greening port investment is encouraged with a total investment according to the planning estimate by 2030 of about 4.16 billion USD; by 2050 of about 6.65 billion USD.

Regarding aviation, priority will be given to investing in a number of large airports, playing a key role in the Hanoi Capital region and Ho Chi Minh City region; gradually upgrading and effectively exploiting 22 existing airports; calling for investment in new airports... with the total green investment estimated by the planning to 2030 at about 17.1 billion USD; by 2050 at about 21.06 billion USD.
