Supporting industry development:

Vietnamese mechanical engineering is ready for green production

Thanh Lộc |

Renewable energy and electricity industry is one of the fields that Vietnam is focusing on developing to achieve green growth in the coming time. This is also an opportunity for supporting industries, especially the mechanical and manufacturing sectors.

Recently, on December 10, in Hanoi, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Industry and Trade) and the Vietnam Association of Mechanical Enterprises jointly organized the Workshop "Policy mechanisms, orientations and solutions for the development of equipment manufacturing industry serving the renewable energy and electricity industry". Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Phan Dang Phong - Director of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering - said that in the current context when fossil fuel resources are gradually depleted and the Prime Minister is committed to achieving "net zero emissions" by 2050, renewable energy and electricity are becoming one of the issues of great concern in Vietnam in particular and in the world in general.

Dr. Vu Van Khoa - Deputy Director of the Institute of Mechanical Research - said that in the context of increasingly limited electricity production from fossil fuels, electricity production from renewable energy sources is very necessary and inevitable.

"The State needs to continue to plan good localization mechanisms for domestic enterprises, mastering this field in the domestic market. From there, reach out to the region and global chains," Mr. Khoa emphasized.

Mr. Do Hoai Nam - Chairman of Hanoi Mechanical Company - said that the demand for development in the renewable energy industry in coastal and island areas of Vietnam is very large, necessary, ensuring the right direction of the international convention on gradually reducing and eliminating technologies with large greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, there is also a huge demand for the equipment manufacturing industry serving the development of the renewable energy industry.

The Prime Minister has approved the Strategy for the development of Vietnam's mechanical industry to 2025, with a vision to 2035. However, at present, the issue of localization of equipment in the renewable energy industry is still limited, some important equipment (turbines - generators; propellers ...), we still have to import 100%. The remaining equipment or services, depending on the level, we have different levels of localization and we have only localized 100% for simple equipment/services such as structure, construction, installation.

"Thus, the potential for the development of the equipment manufacturing industry serving the renewable energy industry for coastal and island areas of Vietnam in the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2045, is very large," said Mr. Do Hoai Nam.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Chi Sang - Vietnam Mechanical Enterprise Association, to ensure the correct implementation of the goals of Power Plan 8 and realize the commitments of the Vietnamese Government at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2021 (COP26), especially the goal of achieving "net zero emissions" by 2050, it is necessary to research and develop specific mechanisms and policies to implement domestic design and manufacture of wind power plant equipment. Thereby, creating a scientific basis for state management agencies to issue policies and mechanisms to develop the mechanical engineering industry to serve the domestic energy industry.
