On October 14, Dong Ha city held a ceremony to announce the Prime Minister's Decision to recognize Dong Ha city as a type II urban area and celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Dong Ha city (2009-2024).
Dong Ha is located at the intersection of National Highway 1A and National Highway 9, the intersection of the trans-Vietnam route by road, rail, and sea, and is the starting point to the East of Vietnam on the East-West economic corridor.
After the complete liberation of the South, Dong Ha was an area that suffered the heavy consequences of the war. With a very low starting point, the Party Committee, government and people of Dong Ha made efforts to overcome all hardships.
On July 1, 1989, Quang Tri province was re-established, Dong Ha became the provincial capital, the political, economic, cultural and social center of the province. By December 2005, Dong Ha town was recognized as a type III urban area and by August 11, 2009, Dong Ha city was established, directly under Quang Tri province.
After 19 years of being recognized as a type III urban area, 15 years of Dong Ha becoming a city, Dong Ha has changed every day and initially taken the shape of a modern urban area. Dong Ha's economy has developed comprehensively, achieving a fairly good growth rate, averaging 11.2% per year. 2022 marks the year of self-balancing budget revenue and expenditure; the average gross domestic product per capita has increased over the years and is estimated to reach more than 199 million VND/person/year by the end of 2024.
Urban planning and management have been directed with attention, infrastructure and urban embellishment have been gradually upgraded and completed, many large-scale projects have been invested and are being completed and put into use, creating a new look for the young city. People's lives have been improved and enhanced, the poverty rate is now 361 households, accounting for 1.44%.
At the ceremony, Quang Tri Provincial Party Secretary Le Quang Tung emphasized that Dong Ha being recognized by the Prime Minister as a type II urban area under the province is not only a title, but also a great responsibility ahead. Being a type II urban area means that Dong Ha needs to continue to promote investment, develop more strongly and sustainably in all areas of economy - society, infrastructure, environment, culture, national defense - security and even building the political system.
Authorized by the Prime Minister, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghi - Minister of Construction said that Dong Ha city being recognized as meeting the standards of a type II urban area will bring opportunities, attract investment interest, create conditions to promote the role, position and strength as the economic center of Quang Tri province. The leader of the Ministry of Construction requested Dong Ha city to pay attention to and do well the task of investing in construction and upgrading infrastructure, promptly overcome the weak criteria compared to the standards of a type II urban area; pay more attention to the development of social housing...
In preparation for the Ceremony to announce the Prime Minister's decision to recognize Dong Ha city as a type II urban area, Dong Ha city mobilized 350 million VND for fireworks display, but due to storms affecting some northern provinces, the ceremony was narrowed down; the fireworks display funds were used to give gifts and build works for policy beneficiaries and poor households in the area.
