New shirt for sidewalks
These days, on many inner-city roads of Ho Chi Minh City, it is easy to see the image of workers diligently dismantling old brick layers, leveling the foundation and installing new granite stones.
On March 21, at the intersection of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Ham Nghi (District 1), the work of digging up the old sidewalk layer is being urgently carried out. Some workers are controlling cranes to move concrete areas, while others are using soap to clean smaller areas.
The construction process of the new sidewalk is carried out in order: pouring foundation stone, pouring concrete, winding the curb and finally paving the stone. Central roads such as Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Pasteur, Ly Tu Trong... are being renovated synchronously to improve the quality of urban infrastructure. In addition to the projects under construction, many streets have taken on a new look thanks to the layer of granite.
On Nguyen Trai Street (in front of Phu Dong roundabout, District 1), the 15m wide sidewalk has been completely paved with stone, creating an airy, modern space. About 1km away, the sidewalk on the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Nguyen Cong Tru route has also been upgraded, contributing to creating a spacious landscape for the area.
Not only District 1, a series of sidewalk upgrade projects are being implemented in other districts, such as District 4 with 44 projects, Phu Nhuan with 32 projects, Tan Binh with 30 projects, District 6 with 23 projects, District 12 with 20 projects, Binh Thanh with 18 projects, District 10 with 14 projects, District 5 with 9 projects...
Hundreds of billions of VND to renovate sidewalks
According to Mr. Pham Quach Truong Giang - Director of the District 1 Construction Investment Project Management Board (investor), District 1 is simultaneously implementing sidewalk repair and upgrade projects to beautify the urban area and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification.
Currently, District 1 is renovating 37 sidewalks with a total cost of more than 355 billion VND. The items include granite paving, rebuilding sidewalks, replacing gas tunnel covers and paving concrete entrances to alleys.
Mr. Giang said that most of the renovated sidewalks have been seriously degraded due to investment since before 2010. Many areas have subsided and peeled, causing loss of aesthetics and affecting pedestrians. In 2024, District 1 completed the upgrading of 9 sidewalks with a total capital of nearly 49 billion VND. To limit the impact on people's daily life and business, construction work is mainly carried out at night, while during the day, focusing on installing curbs and paving completed stone.
In District 6, Mr. Nguyen Huy Thang - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee - informed that the locality is implementing sidewalk upgrades on 8 streets, including: Pham Van Chi, Van Than, Minh Phung, Nguyen Van Luong, Hau Giang, An Duong Vuong... with a total area of over 67,000m2 and a cost of 55 billion VND.
According to Mr. Thang, the simultaneous upgrading of sidewalks on many important routes not only helps the city become more spacious and clean, but also shows the determination to beautify the urban area, creating the best conditions for people and tourists during the April 30 holiday.
