The project to control water resources on the southern bank of the Hau River in Soc Trang province is invested by the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), with a total cost of 900 billion VND, including 1 Rach Mop boat lock and 5 saltwater prevention sluices in Muong Khai 2, Tra Ech, Cai Trung, Cau Truong, Tra Quyt.
Rach Mop boat lock is located on Rach Mop river, bordering Nhon My commune (Ke Sach district) and Song Phung commune (Long Phu district). The project started construction on January 2023 and is considered the largest saltwater barrier in Soc Trang province with an investment cost of over 500 billion VND.
The culvert has a water clearance of 85m, including 2 compartments. Each compartment is 35m wide and 1 boat lock compartment is 15m wide. In addition, there are also auxiliary works such as management house, automatic monitoring system, embankment.
According to Mr. Kieu Van Cong - Deputy Director of the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10, the Rach Mop boat lock project has completed 81.4% of the volume. The investor and contractor are speeding up construction to complete the main items to meet the conditions for operating the saltwater barrier in the 2024-2025 dry season and will complete the project 1-2 months ahead of schedule.
As for the remaining 5 culverts, Muong Khai 2, Tra Ech, Cai Trung, Cau Truong (Ke Sach district) and Tra Quyt (Chau Thanh district), the consulting unit is preparing design documents and is expected to hand over the adjusted site before November 15, 2024 for the locality to carry out compensation and site clearance work.
The investor representative said that the unit is seeking opinions from Soc Trang province to adjust the technical design of the culverts located in Ke Sach district. The adjustment is to ensure the safety of waterway traffic and facilitate future management and exploitation.
The project to control the water source on the southern bank of the Hau River, after completion, will keep the water fresh, creating conditions for stable and sustainable production for the natural area of 19,220 hectares in the districts of Ke Sach, Chau Thanh, Long Phu and Soc Trang City (Soc Trang Province). Minimize the impact caused by drought and salinity and create a source of fresh water support to cope with high salinity periods on the Hau River for the natural area of 36,710 hectares in the districts of Ke Sach, Chau Thanh (Soc Trang Province) and Chau Thanh district, Nga Bay City (Hau Giang Province). Increase the ability to circulate the flow, improve the efficiency of acidification, alum washing and drainage, and improve the environment of the project area.
