On October 9, Mr. Bui Duy Lieu - Deputy Head of the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project - said that up to now, the project's construction volume has reached more than 99% of the contract volume. Previously, in the second half of March 2024, the Mekong Delta entered the peak of the dry season, with saltwater intruding deep into the Mekong River estuaries. The saltwater prevention sluices were closed.
In Tien Giang, at that time, Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate at the head of the canal in Binh Duc and Song Thuan communes (Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province) was 80% completed and was also put into emergency operation, preventing saltwater from the Tien River from penetrating deep.
Thanks to the abundant water source in the canal and the guaranteed salinity, many farmers along Nguyen Tan Thanh canal have used pumps to pump water into garden ditches and quench the thirst of the plants.
Mr. Le Van Bay (residing in Song Thuan commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province) recalled: “I planted coconut trees with an area of nearly 3,000 m2. After the Lunar New Year 2024, saltwater attacked. At that time, although the project was not completed, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development operated the closure of Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate. Thanks to that, it prevented saltwater intrusion, helping people in the sluice gate have a source of fresh water for production and daily life, helping people overcome the 2024 saltwater intrusion drought”.
Mr. Bui Duy Lieu - Deputy Head of the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project - shared: At that time, the Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate project had completed more than 80% of the contract value. After consideration and evaluation, the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 directed the management board to close the sluice gate to protect the fruit growing areas of farmers in Tien Giang province.
Nguyen Tan Thanh sluice gate is built about 420m from Kenh Xang bridge towards Tien river. At the same time, it will create a source of raw water for domestic water supply plants in the region, serving about 800,000 people in Tien Giang province.
