Widespread heavy rain due to the influence of a low pressure trough combined with high-altitude wind convergence caused many areas in Hanoi to record very heavy rainfall on the morning of July 28. Hanoi Drainage One Member Limited Liability Company has mobilized maximum forces and operated many pumping stations to reduce flooding.
According to Hanoi Drainage One Member Limited Company, due to the influence of a low pressure trough with its axis passing through the Central region gradually moving northward, combined with wind convergence developing to an altitude of about 5,000m, from the night of July 27 to the early morning of July 28, Hanoi experienced widespread heavy rain.
By 6 am on July 28, rainfall in many areas reached very high levels. Phu Thuong Ward recorded the largest rainfall with 195.1mm.
Some other areas also had rainfall exceeding 100mm such as Hai Ba Trung (150.8mm), Gia Lam (137mm), Phuc Loi (113.6mm), Bo De (102.9mm) and Ba Dinh (102.2mm). In the areas of Hoan Kiem, Tay Ho, Long Bien, Dong Anh, Viet Hung..., the common rainfall is from 70-95mm.
Heavy rain caused the water level on the regulating river and lake system to rise. At 6 am, the water level of the To Lich River measured at Hoang Quoc Viet reached 4.62m, at Thanh Liet dam reached 3.91m. The water level of West Lake (Trich Sai measurement point) was at 5.94m, and Hoan Kiem Lake reached 7.81m.
Heavy rain in the early morning of July 28 caused some roads to experience water stagnation and localized flooding such as Co Linh street, Thien Duc railway underpass area, Nguyen Gia Bong street and Duc Giang area (section from Duc Hoa market to alley 97).
However, thanks to the timely implementation of drainage solutions, by 6 am on the same day, the flooded point on Co Linh street had completely receded, and traffic returned to normal. The flooded points at Thien Duc underpass and Nguyen Gia Bong street were only slightly flooded, and it is expected to drain completely after about 30 minutes.
Notably, in areas where key and urgent projects are being implemented such as Vo Chi Cong and Quang Trung streets, no flooding occurred.
Representatives of Hanoi Drainage One Member Limited Liability Company said that from 4 am on July 28, the unit has activated a 100% personnel on-duty plan, arranged forces to collect garbage at collection stations, garbage barriers and open drainage gates at regulating lakes to lower the buffer water level.
To reduce pressure on the drainage system, many key pumping stations are operated continuously. In which, Yen So pumping station operates 11/20 units; Co Nhue pumping station operates 3/4 engines; Dong Bong 1 pumping station operates all 3 engines.
In addition, pumping stations belonging to the emergency project group such as Nga 1 Bridge, Nga 3 Bridge and Dong Tep were also operated throughout the rain, contributing to improving flood control efficiency.
By 6 am on July 28, rain in Hanoi had decreased. However, according to the forecast of the Northern Regional Hydrometeorological Station, on July 28, the city still has the possibility of moderate to heavy rain. Hanoi Drainage One Member Limited Liability Company said it will continue to maintain 24/24 hour on-duty forces, continuously operate pumping stations and closely monitor weather developments to promptly handle arising situations.
