Canals in Nam Dinh are dry at the bottom, flooded with waste

The canal system in My Thang commune (Nam Dinh city) has not been dredged for many years, often with exposed bottom, giving off a foul smell and full of garbage, polluting the environment and affecting people's lives.

Canals in polluted residential areas

Lao Dong Newspaper received feedback from people in My Thang Commune (Nam Dinh City, Nam Dinh Province) about the situation where the canal system in this commune is often exposed to the bottom, with a foul smell, causing environmental pollution.

According to people living near the area, the canal and ditch system in the area is often drained for a long time, revealing the mud under the mossy green bottom.

According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters for many days in June, the section of the canal from Tay Bridge to Kenh Bridge (My Thang Commune) is dry at the bottom, leaving only a small stream of water in the middle of the canal. On both sides is a thick layer of moss green mud. At Noi Bridge, the garbage was all over the canal surface, a small ditch next to the bridge turned black and gave off a strong stench.

Not only the garbage under the canal, not far from Noi Bridge is a spontaneous landfill right on the side of the road. All kinds of household waste, scraps of fabric, gas stations... are even packed in sacks and nylon bags spilling onto the road.

Mr. Tran Van Tuan (name changed, in My Thang commune) said: "The situation of water shortage and pollution of the canal and ditch system in the area has occurred regularly and for many years. Especially on summer days, when the rain affects the ground, the stench is extremely unpleasant. Normally, the canal section only has water when it rains heavily and the water is pumped to serve agricultural production. We hope that all levels and sectors will pay attention and take measures to handle the above situation soon".

Not dredged for many years

Regarding the above issue, in an interview with Lao Dong Newspaper, the leader of My Thang Commune People's Committee (Nam Dinh City) confirmed that the situation of canals and ditches in the area being dry and the water level reported by people is correct. The above area is a level 2 canal managed by My Thanh Irrigation Works Exploitation Company, serving drainage.

The water in the canal depends on the time of irrigation, usually during the new crop. At the end of the year, in the dry season, the canal is most dry. The canal is partially dry due to not being dredged or cleared for many years. The company needs to coordinate with local authorities to take measures to handle the above section of the canal. In addition, people also need to raise awareness, not littering the canals, if we detect it, we will handle it strictly" - said the leader of My Thang Commune People's Committee.

Regarding the waste section under the canal, the leader of My Thang Commune People's Committee informed that the local government will coordinate with the company to immediately overcome the situation.
