Overcoming floods to isolated villages to support pregnant women giving birth

Thanh Hoa - The pregnant woman went into labor in the middle of the village being isolated, the inter-sectoral delegation had to go precariously along the elevated water canal in the floodwaters to come in for support.

On September 16, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Dang Hong Son - Chairman of Thanh Ky Commune People's Committee, Thanh Hoa province, said that local functional forces had just overcome floodwaters and approached an isolated village to support pregnant women giving birth.

According to Mr. Son, at about 5:30 am on the same day, Thanh Ky commune authorities received information that a pregnant woman in Hop Tien village showed signs of labor.

Determining this to be an emergency case, the locality immediately mobilized forces including officials of the Commune Health Station, police and militia to the Me stream area, to find a way to approach Hop Tien village.

However, at this time, the floodwaters at Me stream are rising, the current is strong, making it impossible for functional forces to overcome. Options such as stretching ropes across the stream or using canoes were considered but could not be implemented because the floodwaters were too large.

Faced with the urgent situation, the inter-sectoral delegation decided to follow the elevated water canal to overcome the floodwater area and approach Hop Tien village.

This water canal was built more than 20 years ago, and is now degraded, moving on it is potentially dangerous. However, because the pregnant woman is in labor, functional forces decided to use the canal to enter the village for support" - Mr. Son said.

While the inter-sectoral delegation approached the pregnant woman's family, external forces also arranged ambulances, ready to transport the pregnant woman to a medical facility if necessary.

After arriving at the pregnant woman's house, medical staff directly supported the delivery process. The pregnant woman then gave birth safely, and the health of both mother and baby was stable.

According to the Chairman of Thanh Ky Commune People's Committee, this is a rather rare situation because the area was cut off by floodwaters right at the time the pregnant woman went into labor.

Fortunately, functional forces promptly found a way to approach and support the pregnant woman to give birth safely," Mr. Son said.
