Cars are increasingly being repaired with software instead of gauges

Not only engines or gearboxes, software is also becoming a reason why many car models have to be recalled and updated to ensure safety.

According to international media, a large-scale software update for tens of thousands of electric vehicles in China due to errors related to the gearshift system and windshield anti-glare function continues to show that the automotive industry is entering a new stage of development. According to the Chinese market management agency, some vehicles are at risk of unintended gearshift while in operation, while another group may reduce the effectiveness of windshield anti-glare, affecting the driver's visibility. The errors are all fixed through software updates.

If about a decade ago, car recalls mainly originated from engines, gearboxes, braking systems or airbags, now software is increasingly appearing more and more in the list of causes.

This change reflects the transformation of modern cars. On new car models, from battery management systems, air conditioning, entertainment screens, cameras, radar to driving assist features, all are controlled by electronic controllers and millions of lines of code.

That means, besides traditional mechanical breakdowns, just one error in the control program can affect the performance or safety features of the car.

In fact, this trend has appeared in many car manufacturers around the world. In the past time, many electric vehicle models have had to update software to handle errors related to powertrains, battery management, display screens or digital instrument clusters. Instead of replacing components as before, the main solution is to upgrade control software.

This also makes the concept of "car recall" gradually change. If previously car owners often had to bring vehicles to the factory for repair or replacement of spare parts, now many errors can be handled through OTA (Over-the-Air) updates, allowing trucks to install new software via Internet connection.

This process is similar to updating the operating system on a smartphone. Not only fixing errors, updates can also optimize battery management capabilities, improve energy consumption, upgrade entertainment interfaces or add driving support features.

Therefore, many experts believe that cars are gradually shifting from a mechanical product to a software platform.

However, this trend also poses many new challenges for manufacturers. As the number of electronic features increases, testing software before the car is launched on the market becomes more complicated. A small error in the control program can simultaneously affect many different systems.

This is also the reason why management agencies in many large markets are tightening requirements on checking the safety and reliability of software and driver assistance systems in the context of smart cars becoming increasingly popular.

It can be said that the car of 2026 is no longer simply a collection of engines, gearboxes or chassis. Behind each start is the combination of a series of electronic controllers and software.

If previously the familiar image of car repair was associated with wrenches and mechanical tools, in the future, many problems can be fixed with just one software update. This is also a sign that the value of modern cars lies not only in the hardware, but also in the operating control codes inside.
