Ho Chi Minh City plans to clear more than 1,600 households in Song Tan and Ong Lon river areas (Tan Thuan ward) to implement an urban embellishment project worth more than 12,700 billion VND.

Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just approved a joint venture to research and prepare a proposal dossier for the project to renovate Song Tan pond and Ong Lon river areas in Tan Thuan ward (formerly District 7) according to the public-private partnership (PPP) method.

The project has a scale of about 43.57 ha, including Song Tan pond area of 31.68 ha (including 11.46 ha of water surface) and Ong Lon river area of 11.89 ha.

According to surveys, Song Tan pond area currently has about 770 houses on and along the river, while Ong Lon river area has about 853 houses. Thus, the project is expected to affect more than 1,600 households.

All houses within the project implementation area will be relocated and cleared in conjunction with compensation, support and resettlement plans to ensure stable life for people.

The preliminary total investment of the project is about 12,726 billion VND. The capital source is arranged by the investor from equity and legally mobilized capital.

Song Tan pond and Ong Lon river projects are one of many urban embellishment projects along canals and ditches that Ho Chi Minh City is promoting to improve the living environment, embellish the urban landscape and effectively exploit land funds along rivers and canals.

In the period 2025 - 2030, instead of just relocating about 20,000 houses as previously planned, Ho Chi Minh City has raised the target to about 40,000 houses on and along canals and ditches.

One of the key areas is the canals and ditches in the old District 4 and District 8.

Currently, the project to renovate the North bank of Doi canal is being implemented on a length of about 4.3 km through Chanh Hung and Phu Dinh wards, with a total investment of more than 7,300 billion VND.

Meanwhile, the south bank area of Doi canal is planned into 4 urban embellishment projects with a total investment of about 47,462 billion VND, expected to clear and relocate about 5,807 households.

In addition to Doi canal, Ho Chi Minh City will also simultaneously implement many projects to renovate other canals and ditches.

Specifically, the Xom Cui canal urban embellishment project (Binh Dong ward) is expected to relocate about 1,190 houses; Ong Lon canal project (Chanh Hung ward) about 720 houses; Ba Tang canal project (Binh Dong ward) about 393 houses.

In addition, the urban embellishment project combined with compensation, support and resettlement along the Can Giuoc River (Binh Dong ward) is expected to clear about 250 houses.

In Phu Dinh ward, the Ba Do canal renovation project has a total investment of about 1,144 billion VND, expected to relocate about 280 houses; the Ba Ca canal project will clear about 174 houses.

In addition, the city is also preparing to implement renovation projects along Du canal (section from Cao Lo street to Huynh Thi Phung street, relocating about 420 houses), Cau Don canal (106 houses), Bo De canal (80 houses), Ong Nho canal section from Cao Lo street to Rach Song Sang bridge (606 houses), East bank of Xom Cui canal (287 houses) and West bank of Ong Nho canal (650 houses).
