On May 22, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a plan to implement compensation, support, and resettlement for the project of Dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure construction of Van Thanh canal in Thanh My Tay ward.
According to the plan, the project includes 19 implementation steps. The city requests to complete land acquisition, hand over the site and manage the recovered land fund before September 15, 2026 to serve project construction.

Van Thanh canal, formerly belonging to Binh Thanh district, now Thanh My Tay ward, is nearly 2 km long, stretching from Vo Oanh street to the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal junction. This canal route plays an important role in draining water and reducing flooding for the Northeast gateway area of Ho Chi Minh City.
However, for many years, this canal has been encroached upon, silted up and seriously polluted, greatly affecting the environment and people's lives in the area.

To improve the above situation, Ho Chi Minh City is implementing a project to dredge, improve the environment and build Van Thanh canal infrastructure with a total investment of more than 8,555 billion VND, divided into two component projects.
The compensation, support, resettlement and site clearance project has a total capital of more than 6.812 billion VND. A total of 1,077 households were cleared to implement the project, of which 749 households were completely cleared.
Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee had approved the use of 70 apartments at apartment building 283 Le Quang Dinh (Gia Dinh ward) to arrange resettlement for households subject to clearance. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction is continuing to review the housing and land fund belonging to public assets to supplement resettlement resources, ensuring meeting the needs when the project is implemented.
Thanh My Tay Ward People's Committee is assigned to compile a list of cases eligible for resettlement, develop a plan to arrange specifically, for the right subjects, and limit complaints from arising.

Meanwhile, the project to build and dredge the canal and build technical infrastructure of Van Thanh canal has an investment capital of more than 1,743 billion VND.
According to the plan, the entire Van Thanh canal will be renovated with a length of about 2.24 km, including the main canal line nearly 1.96 km long and a sub-canal branch about 275 m long. The project will dredge the canal bed 3 m deep, 25 m to 80 m wide; build a system of concrete embankments; complete the drainage system for rainwater and wastewater.
In parallel, the city will build canal-side roads and parallel roads connecting to Dien Bien Phu street with cross-sections from 11 m to 20 m wide.
The project also includes the construction of a new Phu An bridge 19 m wide; expanding and upgrading Ngo Tat To road section from Phu An bridge to Phu My road to 25 m.
Notably, about 4.2 hectares of land along the canal will be planned into parks and green spaces.

According to the plan, the Van Thanh canal renovation project is expected to start in 2027 and be completed by the end of 2029.
When completed, the project will not only help clear the flow, collect wastewater and bring it to the centralized treatment system of Ho Chi Minh City, but also form a canal-side traffic axis, increasing connectivity between key routes such as Dien Bien Phu, Ngo Tat To, Nguyen Huu Canh and Vo Oanh.
