One year after the two women's teams of Spain and England faced off in the World Cup final, their male counterparts will clash at the EURO 2024 final.
This will be the 28th time Spain and England have met in 95 years. In the previous 27 times, Spain won 10, England won 14. And they also left memorable matches.
England 7-1 Spain, Friendly (December 9, 1931)
Two years after their first meeting, Spain won 4-3 to become the first European team to defeat England, the "Three Lions" welcomed their opponents to Arsenal's old Highbury stadium.
England took revenge coldly with a 7-1 victory. Tommy Johnson, Jack Smith and Sammy Crooks all scored twice, while Everton legend Dixie Dean scored once.
Until now, Spain had never suffered a worse defeat than that defeat in North London.
Spain 1-2 England, EURO 1968 quarter-final second leg (May 8, 1968)
EURO 1968 only had room for four teams in the final round, meaning the quarter-finals were still part of the qualifying round. Spain and England had to play two rounds to qualify for the final round.
The reigning world champions at that time gained a slim advantage in the first leg with Bobby Charlton's only goal at Wembley.
In the return leg in Madrid, Amancio brought the final score back into balance, however, the "Three Lions"'s advantage was restored just 7 minutes later thanks to Martin Peters' header.
Then Norman Hunter's goal in the 82nd minute sent England to their first EURO.
England 0-0 Spain (penal score 4-2), EURO 1996 quarterfinals (June 22, 1996)
The EURO 1996 knockout round opened with a match between England and Spain at the old Wembley Stadium, after both teams were undefeated in the group stage.
Although there were no goals in regular time, the match was not without controversy. Spain had two goals disallowed because of offside, of which Salinas's perfect strike would have been recognized if VAR existed today.
30 minutes of extra time also resulted in no goals, leading to a penalty shootout. Here, Fernando Hierro hit the crossbar, David Seaman blocked Miguel Angel Nadal's kick from Spain, while David Platt, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer and Stuart Pearce from England all succeeded.
England 2-2 Spain, Friendly (November 15, 2016)
The friendly match at Wembley marked the end of four matches for interim coach Gareth Southgate . Adam Lallana and Jamie Vardy helped England lead 2-0 and get very close to victory.
However, in the 89th minute, Iago Aspas shortened the score, before the drama came in the 6th minute of injury time of the second half, Isco Alarcon scored to equalize the score 2-2.
After that match, Southgate officially became the head coach of the "Three Lions".
Spain 2-3 England, UEFA Nations League (October 15, 2018)
The most recent meeting in the Nations League group stage witnessed exciting developments. At Benito Villamarin Stadium in Seville, England tore through the Spanish defense with 3 goals - 2 goals from Raheem Sterling, 1 goal from Marcus Rashford - within 38 minutes.
In the second half, Paco Alcacer and Sergio Ramos scored for Spain, but not enough to prevent England from winning tickets to the Nations League finals.
