Stock market liquidity continues to be low

Stock market liquidity has not improved well, reflecting the cautious sentiment of investors.

In the trading session on August 7, the stock market continued to face fluctuations and tug-of-war. The VN-Index was supported by some bluechips and the oil and gas group, while many large-cap stocks were pressured to take profits, causing the market to not be able to break through.

Closing the trading session on August 7, VN-Index increased by 3.28 points (+0.19%), to 1,768.06 points. HoSE had 164 gainers and 139 losers, total trading volume reached nearly 660.6 million units, value of 18,141.5 billion VND.

Block transactions contributed nearly 132 million units, worth 3,661 billion VND and the largest of which was more than 8.28 million DMX shares, worth more than 670 billion VND.

At the end of the first trading week of August, the VN-Index increased by more than 32 points, equivalent to +1.86%. Market liquidity has not improved well, even with erratic fluctuations in recent sessions, reflecting the cautious psychology of investors.

In that context, many securities companies (CTCK) believe that VN-Index needs more accumulation time after not being able to overcome the long-term resistance zone.

VPBank Securities Company (VPBankS) said that with market liquidity decreasing and foreign investors returning to net selling, it also makes psychology more cautious. VN-Index has not yet surpassed the long-term average lines, so it needs more accumulation time with low trading volume to create a new foundation. VPBankS recommends limiting surfing and avoiding short-term fluctuations that disrupt long-term investment strategies.

Asean Securities Company (Aseansc) forecasts that VN-Index is likely to continue to struggle around the 1,760-1,770 point range before forming a clearer direction. Short-term investors are recommended to maintain an average ratio, avoid chasing and trade in the 1,760-1,790 point range. With a longer-term vision, adjustment phases can be used to accumulate parts of good fundamental stocks belonging to the banking, securities, retail, public investment and oil and gas groups.

SSI Research also believes that selling pressure related to leverage may gradually decrease in the near future. In Q2/2026, margin balance increased by 26,700 billion VND, equivalent to 6% compared to the previous quarter, making the market more sensitive when adjusting in July. After part of the leverage has been released, mandatory selling pressure is likely to cool down in the next month or two, creating more favorable conditions for short-term developments.

SSI Research assesses that trading opportunities may appear in August. However, this securities company believes that the market has not yet signaled a reversal of trend in the medium term as interest rate pressure is likely to last in the second half of 2026, in the context of high credit demand and ambitious economic growth targets.

Based on the current technical developments and supporting factors of the market, Vietcap Securities Company offers a basic scenario that VN-Index has a 65% probability of successfully conquering the 1,800 point mark, with the nearest support zone at 1,750 points. Exceeding the 1,800 point mark will bring the index back to the upward market area. In this scenario, Vietcap forecasts that VN-Index may reach the 1,885 point mark in August 2026.

One of the notable supporting factors for the August market is the semi-annual business results of listed companies.

The season of announcing financial statements for the first 6 months of 2026 has basically closed. According to Vietcap statistics, total after-tax profit attributable to the parent company's shareholders of 84 stocks within the monitoring range reached a growth rate of 57% compared to the same period last year.

Vietcap assesses that the above data contributes to consolidating the basic foundation of the market, while supporting the attractive P/E valuation of VN-Index.

Another factor that the market is interested in is that FTSE Russell is expected to announce the semi-annual review results of the FTSE Global Equity Index Series on August 21.

This result will include a list of Vietnamese stocks added to the index after the market was officially upgraded in September.
