Goalkeeper Andre Onana is one of the few players in good form at Manchester United at the moment. The Cameroonian has been excellent despite the Red Devils' decline, with his worst start to a Premier League era.
Erik ten Hag's side have picked up just eight points from seven Premier League games. This is their worst start in the history of the tournament, 1 point less than last season.
In the past 7 matches, Man United have conceded 8 goals, 6 of which were in the losses to Liverpool (0-3) and Tottenham Hotspur (0-3). Overall, there are eight other Premier League sides this season that have conceded the same number of goals conceded or conceded, less than the Red Devils.
However, the Premier League is not like other tournaments like La Liga. The highest level of English football does not calculate the rate of goals conceded/match to consider the "Golden Gloves" title but only calculates the number of clean sheets.
Onana is the only goalkeeper in the tournament to keep a clean sheet 4 times so far, against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. The Man United goalkeeper's achievements have surpassed Alisson Becker and David Raya.
Compared to the other goalkeepers in the tournament, Onana is not one of the players with the most saves. His 22 saves are far behind those of Robert Sanchez, Mark Flekken and Mads Hermansen. In fact, the eight Premier League goalkeepers this season have made as many saves as or more than Onana.
Moreover, the three goalkeepers above had to endure more shots on target than Onana. Flekken (46), Hermansen (45) and Robert Sanchez (41), while Onana had just 29 shots. The Cameroonian player is 12th in the Premier League for direct shots and 9th for saves.
Man United's expected goals conceded in the Premier League this season are 10.27. This means Onana has saved more than expected by 2.27 goals.
Onana, who moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, has had a much better start to the season than last year. He still plays steadily, despite the weak defense due to injuries and a tight schedule.
Onana recently won the "Premier League Saving Man of the Month" award. The Cameroonian goalkeeper received this award thanks to two consecutive incredible saves in Man United's goalless draw with Crystal Palace in round 5.
This is the second time Onana has won this award. The "Red Devils" goalkeeper was honored after successfully blocking Lyle Foster's shot against Burnley at Old Trafford last season.
