Goalkeeper Andre Onana is one of the few players in good form at Manchester United at the moment. The Cameroonian player has been excellent despite the "Red Devils" going downhill, with the worst start in the Premier League era.
Coach Erik ten Hag's team has only won 8 points after 7 rounds in the Premier League. This is their worst start in the history of the tournament, 1 point less than last season.
In the last 7 matches, Man United have conceded 8 goals, 6 of which were in defeats against Liverpool (0-3) and Tottenham Hotspur (0-3). Overall, there are 8 other teams in the Premier League this season that have conceded the same number of goals or less than the "Red Devils".
However, the Premier League is not like other leagues such as La Liga. The top division of England does not consider the ratio of goals conceded/match to determine the "Golden Glove" award, but only the number of clean sheets.
Onana is the only goalkeeper in the league to keep four clean sheets so far, against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. The Man United goalkeeper has surpassed Alisson Becker and David Raya in that tally.
Compared to the rest of the league, Onana is not one of the most prolific savers. His 22 saves are far behind the 33 made by Robert Sanchez, Mark Flekken and Mads Hermansen. In fact, eight Premier League goalkeepers this season have made as many or more saves than Onana.
Furthermore, the three goalkeepers mentioned above have faced more shots on target than Onana. Flekken (46), Hermansen (45) and Robert Sanchez (41), while Onana has only had 29. The Cameroonian is ranked 12th in the Premier League for shots faced and 9th for saves.
Man United's expected goals conceded in the Premier League this season is 10.27. This means Onana has saved 2.27 more goals than expected.
Onana, who moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, has had a much better start to the season than last year, remaining consistent despite a defensive weakness due to injuries and a busy schedule.
Onana has recently won the Premier League Save of the Month award. The Cameroonian goalkeeper received the award for two incredible saves in a row in Man United's goalless draw with Crystal Palace in Round 5.
This is the second time Onana has won the award. The Red Devils goalkeeper was honoured for his successful save from Lyle Foster against Burnley at Old Trafford last season.
