Chelsea finds new leader in defense

Maxence Lacroix joins Stamford Bridge for a fee of 52 million pounds, becoming a piece expected to elevate Chelsea's defense.

Chelsea has officially signed central defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for a fee of 52 million pounds. The French international signed a contract valid until 2032 with the Stamford Bridge team, becoming one of the notable additions to The Blues' defense before the new season.

Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial fee of £15.5 million and quickly became a key player under coach Oliver Glasner.

Last season, the French center-back played 55 matches in all competitions, contributing to helping Crystal Palace win the UEFA Conference League title - the first European title in club history.

At the national team level, Lacroix made three appearances at the 2026 World Cup, including the third-place match against England, when France finished the tournament in fourth place.

I am very excited to be side by side with players like Reece James or Morgan Rogers and contribute to writing the story of Chelsea.

I am really proud to be a part of this project. I just want to play early, meet my teammates, coaching staff and start the season. I believe we can create something special" - Lacroix shared.

Lacroix is Chelsea's third new signing in the 2026 summer transfer window, after Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra, as the team prepares to enter their first season under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso.

Previously, Chelsea also completed the agreements agreed from 2025 to bring Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha to Stamford Bridge. In addition, the London team is still negotiating to recruit Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson to strengthen the squad's experience.

Lacroix has been on Chelsea's target list for months, as the board of directors realized that the defense needed to be strengthened in terms of strength, aerial ability and leadership qualities.

Although John Stones and Jacobo Ramon have also been considered, Lacroix is always Chelsea's top priority. Negotiations with Crystal Palace have lasted because the two sides need to agree on the transfer fee and personal terms. Only after closing the 2026 World Cup with the French national team did Lacroix officially give the green light for the deal.

The recruitment of this 1m93 tall center-back also reflects a change in Chelsea's direction after a season that only finished in 10th place in the Premier League and did not win any titles.

Co-owner Behdad Eghbali once affirmed that Chelsea will adjust their strategy, adding experienced players to combine with the young squad including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.

Lacroix is one of the most experienced players Chelsea has signed since BlueCo took over the club. Previously, the team also tried to recruit Granit Xhaka but was unsuccessful.

Along with the Morgan Rogers deal worth 117 million pounds, Lacroix's appearance shows that Chelsea is realizing their plan to bring in players who have proven their ability, instead of just focusing on young talents as before.
