Chelsea's pursuit of Maxence Lacroix, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson is raising speculation about a change in the Stamford Bridge team's transfer strategy under coach Xabi Alonso.
Lacroix, a central defender of Crystal Palace, is only 26 years old but still older than most of the contracts that Chelsea has made in recent years. If he arrives at Stamford Bridge for a fee of about 52 million pounds, the French international will become one of the few players at the peak of his career to be recruited by the London club since BlueCo took over.
Meanwhile, Welbeck (35 years old) and Henderson (36 years old) are both experienced players in the Premier League. If he joins Chelsea, Welbeck may even compete or replace Liam Delap, the 23-year-old striker who was once considered the future of The Blues' attack.
This change is completely opposite to the transfer policy that Chelsea has pursued in the past 3 years. After the unsuccessful 2022 summer with experienced contracts such as Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Stamford Bridge team switched to investing heavily in young talents.
The new strategy brought many successes. Enzo Fernandez quickly became the leader of the midfield, Moises Caicedo affirmed his position as one of the top defensive midfielders in the Premier League, and Cole Palmer rose to become the number one star in Chelsea's attack.
However, not every investment is effective. Mykhailo Mudryk was banned from playing after a doping scandal, Joao Felix disappointed in both Chelsea periods, and Wesley Fofana has been constantly struggling with injuries since joining Stamford Bridge.
Despite spending billions of pounds in the transfer market since 2022, Chelsea has not yet met expectations. They have only won two titles, the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, while their performance in the Premier League is unstable, finishing in 12th, 6th, 4th and 10th respectively.
That makes Chelsea's leadership consider adjusting the strategy. Owner Behdad Eghbali once affirmed that the club will add more experienced players to support the young squad including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.
Xabi Alonso's philosophy also fits this direction. When he was leading Bayer Leverkusen, the Spanish strategist always maintained a balance between youth and experience. Contracts like Granit Xhaka or Alejandro Grimaldo all played an important role in helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga.
Besides experience targets, Chelsea still continues to prioritize quality young players like Morgan Rogers. However, the difference is that they have all proven their ability in the Premier League and are ready to contribute immediately.
If the deals with Lacroix, Welbeck and Henderson are completed, Chelsea will send a clear message that they are no longer focused on future development potential. Instead, The Blues also prioritize players who can create immediate impact to help Xabi Alonso quickly bring the team back into the title race.
