Manchester United players are keen for Ruud van Nistelrooy to stay at the club, despite his future remaining uncertain.
The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford this summer as Erik ten Hag's assistant. Van Nistelrooy took over as interim manager when ten Hag was sacked. He will take charge of the fourth and final game against Leicester before Ruben Amorim arrives.
Amorim will have to decide whether to keep Van Nistelrooy on his backroom staff. The Portuguese will bring some of his former Sporting assistants with him.
Van Nistelrooy has won two of his three games in charge of United so far. The first victory came against Leicester in the Carabao Cup and goalkeeper Andre Onana underlined the desire of the United dressing room to keep Van Nistelrooy.
"100%," the Cameroon goalkeeper told TNT Sports. "Van Nistelrooy is a very good person, a very good coach. He has a lot of experience and he advises us a lot. What he does is great and the players are happy. But in the end, it's not something we can decide. The club makes the decision and we have to accept it."
Van Nistelrooy revealed that he had not yet heard from Amorim, who is in his final week as head coach of Sporting. However, the 48-year-old strategist insisted that he would focus on the team despite still not knowing his future.
"I have to check my phone now to see if Amorim has texted. I think Amorim is focused on the Braga game and I am focused on the Leicester game. That's enough for now and it shows we are focused on our daily work," said the Dutch tactician.
Van Nistelrooy could end Man United's one-year wait for their first European win, beating PAOK in the Europa League in midweek.
No specific decisions have been made about Amorim's backroom team, but he wants to bring five of his assistants from Sporting to Old Trafford.
That includes his long-time assistants Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido. If they were all from Portugal, a Dutchman like Van Nistelrooy would have a hard time fitting in.
