Overview
Now, every path leads to the US, Canada and Mexico - where Thomas Tuchel has the last chance to complete the England team before entering the journey to conquer the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel has announced the list of 35 players for England's upcoming friendly matches, with the first match taking place against Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay at Wembley Stadium.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is the most notable absence, while Jarell Quansah and Eberechi Eze retired due to injury. Ben White and Harvey Barnes were called up to replace them, opening up a last chance to impress.
This is the first time the England team has gathered since November, when Harry Kane's double helped them win 2-0 at the Albanian home ground, thereby completing a perfect qualifying campaign.
England has won their last 10 official matches without conceding a goal, equaling the record of a European team set by Spain in the 2014-2016 period. This is also only the second time in history they have gone through a World Cup qualifying campaign without conceding a goal, after the previous time in 1990 - the tournament where they reached the semi-finals.
Looking towards 2026, the "Three Lions" expect to go even further. In fact, they often start the new year quite well, winning 11 out of the last 13 opening matches (losing 2). However, one of those defeats was against Brazil at Wembley in 2024.
England's record against South American representatives is not too impressive. They have only won 2 in the last 11 matches (5 draws, 4 losses), and have not won in the last 5 matches (3 draws, 2 losses).
However, Tuchel has reason to be confident with the current force, especially Kane. The England captain is in impressive form when scoring 10 goals in the last 10 matches for the national team, including 9 goals in the first 9 matches under Tuchel.
At the club level, Kane also showed stable scoring and assisting efficiency in Bayern Munich's colors, continuing to be the leader in attack.
Not only Kane, Anthony Gordon is also in high form with 10 goals for Newcastle in 2026, only one goal less than Joao Pedro among Premier League players based on the calendar year.
The England national team's defense is also an important fulcrum. The "Three Lions" have kept a clean sheet in 11/12 recent matches, including a 6-match streak since the defeat to Senegal in June 2025. If they continue not to concede, they will equal the record of 7 consecutive clean sheets under Gareth Southgate in 2021.
Head-to-head record
This will be the first time England has faced Uruguay since the 2014 World Cup, a tournament in which the "Three Lions" lost 1-2 and were eliminated early under Roy Hodgson.
In terms of head-to-head history, England only has a win rate of 27% against Uruguay (3 wins after 11 matches). This is one of the most difficult opponents for them, only slightly easier than Brazil (15%, 4/27 matches) and Romania (25%, 3/12 matches) in the group of teams that have met more than 10 times.
However, the possibility of many goals appearing in this confrontation is not high. Two of England's four receptions of Uruguay at Wembley ended with a score of 0-0, at the 1966 World Cup and a friendly match in 1995.
Notably, Uruguay is also one of the three teams that England has drawn 0-0 more than once at Wembley, alongside Wales (3 matches) and Sweden (2 matches).
Score prediction: England 1-0 Uruguay
The match between England and Uruguay takes place at 2:45 am on March 28 (Vietnam time).
