What are the expectations for Man United's winter transfer window?

Man United are on the bench this season. Ruben Amorim may need more additions to strengthen his strength.

Man United entered the winter transfer window with financial pressures, tactical requirements and the need to reform the squad under the reign of new captain Ruben Amorim. While the Red Devils have no tradition of spending big in January, restructuring their squad and handling outstanding issues is necessary if they are to achieve their long-term goals.

The last time the Old Trafford outfit made an official winter transfer window came in January 2020 with Bruno Fernandes. Since then, the deals have been mostly temporary, such as the cases of Wout Weghorst, Marcel Sabitzer and Jack Butland.

Currently, the club's financial situation is no longer as stable as before. According to the report, Man United have recorded a loss of up to 372.8 million pounds in the past year. This has forced the board to tighten spending under the supervision of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

In this context, deals in the January transfer window are expected to be limited. However, if they can raise capital from selling or lending players, The Red Devils have a chance to add new faces.

Currently, Ruben Amorim is applying a 3-4-3 formation, requiring reinforcement in the wing-back position, especially the left wing when Man United lacks depth. Tyrell Malacia has just returned from an 18-month injury, while Luke Shaw is still out for a while. Dalot is often the option to fill this position but is showing a decline in form.

In addition, midfield is also a place where Man United can add this winter. Although Amorim's priority is to maximize the ability of the current squad, adding a central midfielder will help the Portuguese strategist have new options.

Some potential names Man United could target are Alphonso Davies or Alvaro Fernandez. Davies is entering the final year of his contract and has been linked with the Red Devils. The biggest obstacle is the Canadian star's high salary.

As for Fernandez, the Old Trafford team has the right to buy back the young Spanish talent from Benfica, where he has affirmed himself after moving for 9 million Euros. However, re-signing a player who has not had a chance to play could be seen as a step backwards for Man United.

In contrast, to pave the way for new signings, Man United are likely to have to part ways with some players in the squad. With the announcement that he is looking for a new challenge, Marcus Rashford may leave the club. Although PSG has been rumored as a destination, no team in Europe is currently willing to meet the English star's salary of more than 325,000 pounds/week. A loan deal or a transfer to the Saudi Pro League could be a reasonable option.

Other names such as Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Antony or some young players could also be loaned or sold to reduce the squad load this winter. In particular, former captain Harry Maguire is also on the list that could leave when the 31-year-old central defender's contract will expire at the end of the season and is receiving great attention from Napoli.

Man United entered the January transfer window with caution as they had to balance finances while finding ways to meet the tactical requirements of captain Ruben Amorim. Despite the inability to make blockbuster deals, The Red Devils still have the opportunity to take reasonable steps to pursue their ambitions for the rest of the season.
